How Do You Hit The Road?

This holiday season, my wife and I have been (and will be) doing a lot of driving. Highways, highways, more highways. Thanksgiving was in Buffalo 6 hours away and Christmas will be, too. The New Years celebration we’re going to will be in Vermont 5 hours away. So basically that means my feet will be asleep and my legs in folding-chair mode for a total of sixteen hours and counting.

While these car trips are a great bonding experience and a chance to catch up as a couple, sometimes they can get exhausting. Listening to music helps, but how many times can you play Dave Matthews, Coldplay, and Kanye? We need new ways to entertain ourselves during long drives. No more alphabet and license plate game, either.

We’ve taken to bringing a crossword along and trying to solve it aloud as well as a funny magazine for the passenger to read to the driver…including the latest on Brangelina. But I’m running out of ideas, so save me from interstate insanity.

How do you keep yourselves (and spouse) entertained during long drives?

Have you tried a book on cd?  Sounds like you have the perfect opportunity to give it a shot!  I'm rarely in the car long enough to have the opportunity to make it worth my while, since I'm approx. 5 mi. from work, etc.  But - I always thought listening to someone read a mystery out loud always sounded "neat" to me.

We still resort to the license plate game--which is dangerous, as we are very competitive.  We also listen to comedy shows that we download onto an iPod or we play 20 questions.

My husband and I are driving from Ontario to New Brunswick this Christmas, so I hear you on the 16 hour drive dilemma.  Another problem we have is that I can't read in the car without getting carsick.  I think the book on cd is a great idea.  Also, we have a lot of comedian acts on cd, which are really great ways to spend your time.  I reccomend Mitch Hedburg (mostly silly jokes) or Dane Cook (adult content jokes) as two of my favorites.  Or if comedy isn't your thing, a lot of musicals are on cd, such as the phanton of the opera.  If you can get into it, that's a good 3 hours or so of story.  Our biggest problem is that while I'm happy just listening, my hubby would rather chat for the 16 hours.  However, we normally find some sort of compromise.

There's that new game, I think it's called "Would You Rather."  You have two choices, like "Would you rather take a freezing cold shower every day for a week or not be allowed to shower for a week?"  Stuff like that.  It will bring up great conversation.

I too recommend the Audiobook route!  I've also crocheted in the car while DH drives.

I think it's always fun to tune into a 70s or 80s music station too.  It's hilarious when words to songs come back - even if it's only because your parents listened to it!  We were doing that last night and cracking up over "Everyyyyy body wants youuuuu!"  I have no idea who sings that or what it's called and it's funny!  It's more like "naha la la na - Evreee buddy wants uuuuuuuuuuuu" and you make up "duh duh nah nah" to the musical parts and because who really knows all the words to some of those older songs?

We print out copies of recaps to funny shows we love from the internet (usually Television Without Pity) and my husband reads them to me while I drive.  They really do a great job of passing the time.

re: How Do You Hit The Road?

We are both very used to being on the road.  We were in a long distance relationship while I was in college, and now we live four hours away from my entire family so we are visiting often.  i never drive because he always falls asleep in the passenger seat, so he drives and I entertain.  I love our drives because it is when we can have the most off the wall conversations.  He is a philosophy major so he likes to take things as far off as he can, and I like to challenge him.  Our drives are when we can ponder the most radical ideas.  That makes the drive go by so quickly.

Or if we are out of things to say, my iPod is filled with The Office episodes, so we listen to that.  We don't even need to watch it we know it so well.
