Holiday Decorating Tips?

We bought our first tree over the weekend -- a whooping five-footer -- it's the perfect size for our small space and fits nicely in the corner of our living room. We decorated it with a few ornaments and some lights, and it really got us in the holiday spirit.

So now that we have the tree, I want to give our place a little holiday makeover. Besides the tree, we have a couple red candles, and that's it. I don't want to go too overboard, but I do want to find a few more holiday accents to add to our space. One other catch is that I'm also worried about storage -- it has to either double as decor for other seasons or be prized enough to go into one of our three under-bed boxes in the off season.

Anyone have simple holiday decorating ideas? I'm all ears!

re: Holiday Decorating Tips?

My favorite holiday decoration this year is done by using nature.  I gathered pinecones from outside, spray-painted some silver and placed them in a vase with a gold candle.  You can look at my website for pictures.  It was free (we had the spraypaint leftover from another project) so I don't feel guilty throwing it away at the end of the season.  I've heard of people doing the same with tree branches as well,  I also just got a lot of silver and gold candles as decoration because I light candles a lot so I'm sure by the end of the season those will need to be thrown away too.

That's perfect! I love the nature idea -- I'm going to check it out on your site. I was also thinking of buying a poinsettia for our entryway, which also works with my no-storage rule. Thanks!

Watch out with the poinsettia if you have pets.  Also I just read that holly and mistletoe are toxic to pets as well.  Sometimes we get so wrapped up with the holiday decorating that we can overlook things like that.
