Wedding Coordinator question

Hi ladies!
I don't post a whole lot but I love to lurk. I have a question (just posted it on the knot too). I am married, but my MIL's boss has asked me to plan her daughter's reception--they are getting married in Vegas and coming home for the reception. I am trying to come up with a number to charge her. I would be required to meet with vendors and make sure everyone gets paid, purchase items for wedding, decorate, rent linens, setup reception, coordinate the day-of events, keep things on schedule, cut the cake, and clean up after reception is over.

The wedding is Aug 15, and I have a real job (although I'm semi-off during the summers...I work for a yearbook publishing company), so I can't totally commit all my time to this. I am neither a wedding coordinator, nor have I ever done this before. (Except my own wedding). Do you think $1,500 is too much to ask? Please keep in mind this is a family friend, and I don't want to rip them off, but I also want to be compensated for my time. I have the majority of the plan in place, and really, they don't want it super fancy, just nice and put together.

Anyone remember what their coordinator (if you had one) charged?

 TIA!

That seems really high considering you aren't a professional wedding planner.  About how many hours do you plan on spending on this?

This planner charges $1200 for comparable services:

I would probably just try to agree on a fair hourly rate and have them pay you that (track your time as you go along) and then ask to be reimbursed for any supplies purchased.

$1500 seems kind of high.

Maybe Kel will chime in.

"Greetings!
I posted on here last week and wanted to say THANKS for all the linen rental recommendations. I have another question (this is in regards to a reception I have been asked to plan...wedding is in Vegas, reception here).

What do wedding coordinators charge? I am thinking $1500 to plan and execute the ENTIRE reception (meet with vendors, purchase everything..they are paying me back for that though, make sure everything runs smoothly, decorate, tear down). They have made very little decisions so far so I'd be taking it on like it were mind.

Do you think $1,500 is too much to ask? This is a friend of my mother-in-laws. Just wanted to see if anyone is hiring a coordinator and if this price sounds fair.

TIA!"

In regards to your post on TK- I would not purchase everything and have them pay you back.  That is risky.  Most "full" coordinating packages run about $3k-$5k.  Making the comittment is like another full time job, so be prepared... but I think anywhere from $1,000 - $1,500 is reasonable.

Thank you for the replies. I have looked at comparable services on some of the coordinators on the knot. I tried to come up with something similar to "day of" coordinating, which I found ranged between 750-1200 and then also taken into account that I would be doing the majority of the meeting with vendors and such.

I really debated on doing an hourly rate, but with the way my mind works and the schedule I usually have, I can't sit down and dedicate specific hours to it all the time. I might be relaxing watching TV and checking email and then get an idea to check something out related to the event. I feel I would just have a really hard time keeping track and knowing "should I charge for this or not?" When it comes to that kind of organization, I am absolutely terrible.

As for purchasing things and being reimbursed for them (from my knot post), I probably said that wrong. The MOB is giving me money up front for things that need to be purchased. Any rentals/large puchases she will write the check herself (or has an acct at certain places for her business anyway so they know her). But she is giving me $ so I'm not out the cash while planning. I just meant I wouldn't responsible for paying for everything.

 Thanks for the advice again!

Amanda

We got married nearly 5 years ago in California but we did not pay near that for our day of coordination. I think we paid her $450 for day of coordination - and she was seasoned.

It sounds like you are doing a lot more than day of coordination - our lady handled everything for just the wedding day - we met 2-3 times before to get the details straight but she wasn't handling any rentals for us.

But, will I still be spoiled?
