How does a serger work?

What makes a serger better or more efficient than a regular sewing machine?  I know what a serged edge looks like, I just don't understand the benefits.

TIA

It's easier to finish your seams with a serger.

Clearly, I am copping a cheap feel on the Big D

The serger uses more threads than a sewing machine, so it is a more durable seam. It also trims off your excess seam allowance as you sew.

Sergers are really great for knits - that's what most people use them for. They make sewing and finishing the edges (and cutting) really easy.

My next big purchase will be a serger. I bought a great sewing machine and a great embroidery machine, so I have to work on those first! LOL!

It finishes the raw edge so there is no fraying

There are more threads and more needles.
