Re: Home Depot vs. Lowes

Congratulations! In my vast experience as a homeowner (all of 12-13 days), I can tell you that we don't really have a preference. We've been to both multiple times already and have already dropped a lot of money. The prices seem similar. I will say that at Lowes I see more employees around to ask for help, but I don't know if that is just a per-store thing.

Money saving tips: Home Depot rarely puts out coupons, but they do accept competitor coupons. Lowes 10% off coupons are in the change of address packs at the USPS. Try a Habitat for Humanity Restore for anything you can. It will save you money and raise money for a good cause. You do need to go in prepared and with a tape measure though! No handy dandy boxes with specs on them.

It completely depends on the ones in your area. Some are kept better than others and have better customer service than others. Basically, I don't have a preference if they are both kept nice and have good CS. The do, however, carry different products/brands. So, if you are looking around for a new vanity, for example, I'd look at both. Also, they have different brands of paint, which offer different colors. I usually go to Lowes though since they are closer to me.

We like Lowes because they seem to have better prices and more knowledgeable people.  We get our questions answered quickly and we have never had any problems with what we bought.

I have returned countless things to Home Depot because the guy told us the wrong thing, the wrong size etc.

I also HATE HD's paint.  It streaks and doesn't cover well. I LOVE Lowe's Valspar brand.  It is thicker than most paints of the same quality, is a great price and covers lighter colors or primer with only one coat.

Lowes.  Better items and customer service and they price match Home Depot [at least here]

Lowes because we get a military discount.  We recently remodeled our bathrooms and we picked up a vanity from Lowes that ended up having dings in it.  We brought it back and they exchanged it for us without a problem.  They were very helpful through the remodel process when I went in to select various items.  That said, I got the tile at Home Depot because I liked the color better.

The home depot's in our area gives a 10% military discount, they just don't advertise it.

Same here.  Both Lowe's and Home Depot in our area offer a 10% military discount if you ask for it.  That being said, I still prefer Lowe's.

I've only ever been in each store once or twice. However, I've always gotten the impression that Lowe's is more female-friendly. I have no clue what I'm basing this on.

Do you find this accurate?

I've read news articles before that this is actually Lowe's marketing plan to be more woman-friendly.

I'm torn between the two.  I go to Home Depot more often and have purchased more high-ticket items from them (my entry door, flooring for my kitchen, etc).  I love their BEHR paint also, and have used it a lot in my home.  I find the prices are usually lower at Home Depot, and I have their credit card so they send coupons and special financing offers a lot.  On the bad side, their customer service could be better (I once cut my hand trying to buy drywall because I couldn't find anyone around to help me).

Lowe's seems to have better decor items and gifts, as well as better customer service.  This summer my friend asked for Garden Gnome's for her birthday and Home Depot literally did not have any in stock.  I went to Lowe's and found a ton of them!  Their store is brighter lit, cleaner and better laid-out than Home Depot too.

personally i like the layout of lowe's better. but i wouldn't say i'd choose it overall because some products are better at lowes, while some are better at home depot. example, our lowes has a great appliance selection, but for nitty gritty stuff like drywall, DH will only buy from HD because they have better quality on that stuff.

We go to both Home Depot and Lowes a lot.  Lowes is a little closer than HD.

In this house we have only used Valspar paint from Lowes and couldn't be happier with it. It only took one coat for our red and orange kitchen.

I don't have experience with returns at HD but Lowes was great when we returned a bunch of cabinets over a year later with out a receipt.

We always get coupons in the mail from Lowes. $20 off of $100. Stuff like that.

A guy I work with now worked as a marketer and Lowe's about 5 or so years ago - and he would be pleased to see this.  Lowe's made a HUGE push to be more female friendly by brightening up the stores, labeling aisles better, and changing the layouts.

I went to HD today - it's slightly closer and had excellent customer service even though the workers were wiped from the sales and such.
