Bringing in plants for the winter

It's probably a stupid question, but I've never done it before...If you have perennials in pots and bring them in for the winter...(basement/garage), I'm assuming you still need to water them and not just ignore them?  What about light availability?  Do they need light?

Yes, you will have to water them and provide sufficient light if you want them to survive. Just as they need water and light outdoors.

When I over-winter my flowers, I have them in the basement; it's dark down there, so I have to provide artificial light. Fluorescent lights can work, but they also sell special UV lamps for plants. I have a large rack in one corner that the pots sit on, under lamps.

I winter my perennials in the garage where it's cooler so they go into a hibernation of sorts. I water them "as normal" but they don't get much light. (Some, but considerably less than they do outside) I've never had any problem with anything coming back the following year.

I winter over cana lilies, calla lilies and geraniums.

Yes and yes. I brought in rosemary last year, and put it in a window, watering occasionally.

I and my mom have put our geraniums in the garage and they've survived the winter. We watered occassionally, but just enough to get the soil wet and not during the super cold days.  They come back.

And then there ahve been times I've brought them indoors and watered and fed the regularly and they keep on growing and blooming. However, they get super leggy.

To really answer your question...it depends on the perrenial. Some need to rest and go through the winter process.  Contact your local greenhouse and ask for specifics.

What about basil? Would it be better to just dry it instead of trying to keep it alive?
