Update

OK Roswell is HUGE!  You walk in and there is a lady playing a harp.  Later on there was a children's chorus singing. The place is massive and chaotic.  BUT we liked it there.  Everyone was nice.  The thoratic oncologist there was pretty new though and we did not warm to her either (I guess we are picky lol) and I didn't like the way when I would ask a question she would answer only to Mike, hello I am the one with the pen and pad!

We went to Wilmot yesterday and really liked it there and liked the 2 oncologists we saw.  We liked what Roswell wanted in terms of treatment but Mike was concerned about one of the drugs (cisplatin) he was going to get.  One of the side effects is slight permanent hearing loss.  The oncologist at Wilmot told us yesterday he does not usually treat with cisplatin because the slightly higher rate of success is not worth the worse side effects (and since this cannot be cured, there really is no magic bullet).  So the drug he recommended does not cause hearing loss so Mike is way more comfortable with that.  So we are going with Wilmot.  He starts chemo next Thursday.  It takes 7 hours.  Luckily the infusion rooms look comfy and private with a recliner for him and a flat screen and its got wireless access so he can bring his laptop.

The Anchor Bar was great.  DH says its the best wings he has ever had!

I am exhausted.  My house is a wreck and my family is driving up from NC as I type!  It was a tough week.  To keep hearing "incurrable"  and "pallitave" and "quality of life" over and over was hard.  I am looking forward to a quiet couple of days in the mountains... the "calm before the chemo."

I am glad you found some docs that you connected with. That is huge. And also that it's local seems like it will be easier on you guys.

As for the house with your family coming, let them help you out. Families are good that way ;-)

Have a fabulous time at the lake and with your family. It's going to be a gorgeous weekend.

I'm so glad to hear you've found a supportive friendly medical environment.  It would be my guess that at the very least having a plan of action helps a bit.  Are you excited to see your family?

Make no mistake. We are bowed, but not discouraged. We are sad, but not disheartened. We grieve, but not as those who are without hope.

Wow...you guys have had so much to think about...since I missed your earlier posts, may I ask what kind of cancer he has?  I'm glad you are able to get away for a few days before the chemo starts.  Thanks for the update...I've been thinking about you guys.

Mrs.JDD he has Lung Cancer (doesnt smoke- everyone automatically asks that lol).  Its already spread to his bones so its stage 4 :-(  At this point its not curable but they are hoping to treat it like a chronic illness and keep it at bay for many many years.

Oh my goodness.  I can imagine that is very frustrating...to get lung cancer and not be a smoker.  Miracles can happen...I've seen it a couple of times with family and friends who thought they had no chance and ended up going into remission.  I will definitely keep you guys in my thoughts.

I'm so glad you guys have found a place and doctors that you feel comfortable with, that definitely helps.  Please know that our thoughts are with you and we are here anytime for you to vent as needed.  I cannot imagine the enormous amounts of stress you are under right now but I think I speak for everyone here when I say that you are incredibly strong and courageous.

Enjoy the long weekend with your family!  I'm sure the fresh air will do everyone some good!

And yes, Anchor Bar is awesome!  DH and I spontaneously drove to Buffalo from BInghamton on our anniversary just to try the wings at Anchor Bar!  Totally worth the trip! Big Smile

Having a choice must be really empowering.  Enjoy your time with your family - and remember, they're coming to see you, not a spic and span house!

I'm sorry that you didn't like Roswell. I know that they take great care of their patients. it's too bad the Dr. you saw didn't give you what you needed. but i am glad that you found a place you are comfortable with and i hope that your DH's treatments go smoothly and with limited side effects.

keep us posted and feel free to use us to vent anytime. we're here for you!

I'm glad you found a place that you are both comfortable using and I hope chemo goes as smoothly as possible. Are they going to use radiation for the bone spots or just the chemo?

Enjoy your weekend & don't worry about the house!!

Since the bone mets are not belived to be causing any pain, they are not going to radiate them now.  He will be given Zometa to strenghten the bones though.

He is going for a brain MRI tomorrow to rule out brain mets too. (fingers crossed!)

I'm happy you found a place you both like and feel comfortable with.  I would imagine that's pretty important.  I think having the family  around and some time away should be helpful - especially on such a beautiful weekend.  And don't worry about the house - they're family and should absolutely understand.  I hope the weekend is fun and helps you get your mind off things for a while - and wish you the best of luck once chemo starts.  DH and I are thinking about both of you.  Thank you for the update!

That's great that you have a plan and a place your are both comfortable! I am pulling for a good report on the brain mets!

Have fun this weekend, relax and enjoy.....maybe your mom will clean your house for you! My grandma used to clean ours (dishes and what not) when she would come over.

We wish your Dh only the best.......good luck with upcoming treatments Mr. Rivierabound!

So glad to hear that you found a place where you're comfortable and have a treatment plan!  I'll keep my fingers crossed for the MRI tomorrow.  I hope you have a nice visit with your family, and that you and your DH get as much support as you need!

It's great that you found a doctor willing to listen to your concerns and openly discuss them. I have a ringing in my ears from my treatment 12 years ago that I hate, but it was better than the alternative. My prayers and toughts are with you this week, and it's great to see you looking forward to so much before the treatments start. Enjoy your time in the mountains- you really deserve some quiet time.
