rear-d said what?!?

so there's a seriously good chance that our base will be on the right-handside of hurricane gustav (that's the bad side of the storm with the worst winds and rains).  so, naturally, you would think that rear-d would be encouraging their spouses and families to leave and take care of their families.

nope!  rear-d told one of my friends that it would make it easier on them if they just stayed put for the storm.  because staying put, putting your family in harms way, would make it easier to keep track of them!

hmmm.... no!  i told my family she could tell her rear-d that her priority is taking care of her family and making sure they are safe, not making sure that rear-d's job is made easier.  i told her that once she decided where to take her family, to simply give rear-d the address and to call and confirm once she arrived.  silly rear-d!  the last thing our soldiers need right now is to worry about their families staying put so it would easier for you to keep track of them (by the way, my rear-d has no clue that we are even part of their group because they seem to continously lose our information, since january!).

I don't even know what to say to that! OMG! Keeping the families safe should be their main priority!

I hope everyone stays safe during the storm whether that is riding it out in place or finding somewhere else to go.

While I agree that it is a stupid thing for them to say I'm really wondering why anyone feels the rear detachment is responsible for the families.  To me, the job of the rear detachment is to provide the deployed unit with assistance during deployment, redeployment and with various forms of combat support as required.  The family support group would be the ones designated to provide the information flow between the deployed Soldiers and the families and that is made up of spouses/civilians that have a direct link the rear detachment as far as information flow goes only.

Maybe people erroneously see these as one and the same?  Not trying to start an argument as maybe each service does their family support groups\rear detachment differently so I'm just trying to understand.

hmmmmm could just be me but who does the FRG report back to? the rear-d. so we are "their responsibility", no? in the unit we just left during the huge ice storm we had, if one of our soldiers was at school we made sure the family was okay and we knew where they were. if not we sent soldiers to the house to make sure they were okay. and this was the unit doing this not the FRG........who knows thought. could be different every where.

Has there been a mandatory evacuation order issued?

I understand the rear -d needs to keep track of the families (at least w/ the National Guard that is part of their job) but I'd leave if I felt I was in harms way.  My aunt-in-law (if that's a real word) is actually leaving New Orleans as we speak.  She has 3 locations that she can go to and will decide where to go based on traffic.  I hope anyone in the storms path stays safe!
