Why we do what we do. . .

So a big part of dieting and exercise is figuring out why we are overweight to begin with. For some people it is a genuine need to lose some weight gained from surgery or pregnancy. But for most of us, it may have started out as that, but shifted to comfort, laziness, etc. I thought we could talk about what we think might be the reasons we are eating or not exercising like we should....

I am the queen of excuses. If there is a reason to eat or a reason to not exercise, I am the one with the totally justifiable reason to chicken out of doing what is right. The sad part is I totally KNOW this. I KNOW what I should or should not be doing, but somehow I still do what is easier to do and I totally justify it. Part of my problem, I find, is that I run on autopilot. I remember one day in particular, I woke up and thought I was going to have a great (healthy) day. I stopped by Chick-Fil-A for breakfast and as I was 1/2 way through my chicken biscuit, I realized "oh no!" I had just thrown out my plan that I started out with. So I am working real hard on breaking the cycle of autopilot and staying in better tune with what I need to be doing...

For example: in the supermarket - off the phone. Calls are too distracting...
out to lunch? Ask for nutritional info first, always.
making my lunch to bring with me? leave a post-it note on my phone to not forget it in the fridge (which I have done on more than one occasion!)

I am pretty well on track now. I bring my breakfast & lunch most days. DH and I now only eat out occasionally. I have learned the right things to order and those items to stay away from.

What I need to do is drink alcohol less. I am trying. I am getting better at it, only a few beers on the weekend, but my problem is, when there is football on, I instinctively want a beer. My other problem is that I am a lazy a$$ and I have knee problems. When I get motivated I go all out and need to take so long off to recover that I am no longer motivated.

I know how I got here. I can't believe I am here. I really had no idea when it was happening. After college when I was no longer burning thousands of calories a day, I kept eating the same way. I gained over 100 lbs. (there I said it) I will never be my college weight again, nor should I be. But, I can definitely lose 75 of those 100 lbs and be healthy and happy.

25 down.

Would it help to have a smaller beer? I found Budweiser has an 8 oz bottle and maybe by just having a smaller bottle (and try to sip it a bit more) that might help. Or, if you know game day is coming, spend the morning exercising, so by the time you sit down to watch the game, your metabolism is up and hopefully burning the calories you are drinking.

As for your knee problems. I hear ya. I have similar problems with both my knees and my back. I dont know if you watch biggest loser, but I noticed several girls there who could not do the typical workouts like the others. They did more walking, pool exercises and stuff not impacting their weak areas (in your case, knees) but still did big workouts and lost weight. So maybe next time, do more work on the bike or the arc trainer or elliptical (both are low impact and burn calories like a mother f---er).

I have always been a little 'thick' as my husband would say. I have a hypoactive throid which doesn't help but most of all I would be lazy. We bought a elliptical and we are eating better so we are getting on the right track!

I have tried a smaller beer, I just drink it faster (lol). I do have a plan for this football season...I always eat before watching the game so I don't munch. I drink 1 beer, rinse my glass, and fill it up with water.  I have had SO much less this football season than last!

I do a lot of biking because it is such a low impact workout. I just get bored so easily. Lately I have been doing something different every day which helps with the boredom and each different activity seems to effect my knees differently so that helps as well.

Thanks for the input. It helps to know I can keep using the bike and accomplish something.

I'm 23, and I've noticed an ongoing trend with a lot of people my age, especially when I see classmates I haven't seen since high school. People continue to eat the way they did when they were younger, and do not adjust for age as they get older. I fell into this trap myself, the typical "freshman 15", which i don't think accounts for just drinking, but just reaching that age where you can't continue eating the way you did in high school. It's a sneaky trap, and if you don't catch yourself in time, it's an downward slope until it's time to fix it and you're extremely far gone

I'm new, but I'm totally the excuse making type too.  Like I think "oh I'm sick I can't work out today" and then I'm sick for a whole week and my workout routine goes out the window.  I have a really hard time getting motivated.  I've lost almost 20 pounds this year just by changing what I eat, but I really need to work out and I need to stop finding ways to get out of it.
