Thank you, thank you, thank you for BF Center of Pgh recommendations...
We saw LC (Becky) on Sunday (breasts were engorged and red...they were concerned for mastitis but I didn't have any symptoms...I hate to admit I think I let them get engorged b/c I just hated nursing b/c it was so painful so I had definitely decreased my nursing on Saturday)...they were able to see that we both were doing everything correctly just that my nipples were so chewed up from earlier in the week that it was just causing me too much pain and she would nurse for 40 min b/c she wasn't getting enough in 20 minutes b/c of her latch. I had tried a nipple shield Saturday on my own with some success but they refitted me with a smaller one that fit her mouth better (and not necessarily my nipple). They also give me some APNO to get me through the day to Monday.
As our lucky would have it, I get home, take a nap, wake up and have a fever to 102 with chills, malaise, headache and flu-like symptoms...mastitis at its finest. I called Becky as she gave me her personal cell number and just cried to her. She advised warm compresses, heating pad, and pumping every 30 minutes until engorgement was over and continued nursing. I was so fed up with BF at this point that I just lost it with DH and cried for an hour over "failing at BF"....I decided to exclusively pump until this was over if not indefinitely b/c I had had it with the pain and the nursing and now the mastitis.
Fortunately by Monday morning, my fever broke...I called the OB's office and talked to my OB instead of the nurse (the nurse wanted me to come in for an appointment but I insisted on talking to the OB...and emailed him to ask him to call me if the nurse didn't relay my message, I had no further systemic symptoms, redness gone, engorgement gone, I knew what to watch for so he didn't think antibiotics were needed at this point and to just watch for recurrence and since I was pumping round the clock, I didn't have the pain factor to worry about keeping me from pumping).
Today, I felt great...my nipples looked great after a few APNO application (I only did it maybe 3 times per day). I nursed with the shield the entire day. I'm the happiest I've been since we've come home, BF has been great and actually enjoyable, she nurses for 20 minutes like a champ and if I start to feel too full, I pump so just today I've pumped 6 additional ounces in addition to what I've fed her.
So, I just wanted to thank you all repeatedly for the recommendations as otherwise I would've just given up or still been in total misery with a horrible mastitis. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
