Suggestions...

Ok my DH has this 94 Chevy piece of S*** that has over 200,000 miles on it, eats gas, and not to mention has been sitting in his mom's driveway since MAY...

I have a friend at work that is willing to buy this truck from us for 1,200 because he can fix it up himself and give it to his son. My DH will not give it up!! He is convinced that we should dump more money into it so that we can get at least 2,000 for it. Trust me ladies no one is going to buy this truck for that much with its issues...

Any advice on how to help him give up the ghost? I have even gone as far as telling him that as soon as it is out of his mom's driveway we will go to the dealership and get him a new truck to no avail!!

I feel your pain. My DH has a 1989 Jeep Wrangler with right around 180,000 miles. This thing has been a cash hog but DH LOVES it and insists we could sell it for $6500 "with a few repairs" which is hilarious (it only has one seat in it, the soft top and doors are in pieces, and the FLOOR IS RUSTING OUT).

The only thing that has started to change his mind is that we went ahead and got him a new car (the Jeep needs so much work its impossible to fix and drive at the same time). He loves the new car so much that he's starting to come to terms with releasing the Jeep. One of these days I'm gonna slap a "FOR FREE, PLEASE TOW" sign on it and hope for the best. Not sure this is advice so much as solidarity.

Forget about it. Completely. Let your dh find a buyer, if he's going to; let him fix it, which you know he's not; let it turn to stone in your MILs driveway. Forget it.

I would say that this is not the type of battle you want to engage in with your spouse.  It's his truck -- for whatever strange reason, he's attached to it.  Let him work it out.  If he sells it, fine.  If it doesn't sell, he'll figure out you were right without you having to rub his face in it.

When they say "marriage is hard work" everyone thinks the "hard work" is that you have to make time for each other and keep the romance alive, blah, blah.  That's wrong.  THIS situation is the hard work of marriage; recognizing when you should keep your mouth shut and let the other person muddle through.

I would say forget it and let him keep the truck except for the fact that he wants to keep sinking money into the truck.

My sweetie has a 90 Toyota truck that he absolutely loves.  This thing has something wrong with it every other week (or so it seems).  We know he wouldnt much if he tried to sell it. 

We finally agreed that he can keep the truck, but we have a set limit on how much additional money can go into repairs/maintenance.  Once that limit has been reached, the truck gets the ax (or he will just drive it as is until it dies).  Hmmm...now that I think of it, I should have asked for a shoe/clothing budget equal to the amount that's keeping his truck alive, LOL!  Oh well!

Any money for repairs comes from his discretionary spending.  He has to take his "truck repair money" out of his budget for fun stuff.

I pretty much agree with this. Although I would try to set some kind of limit on how much more $ he invests in it.

Its a happy medium.  He gets to keep his baby a bit longer and I know that there wont be a limitless supply of 'good money' going down a bad road, so to speak.  Smile

That sounds like a good deal to me.

 Sounds like he's attached to that car. Some of us with older vehicles nearing 100K miles or exceeding that are like that.

My mom and dad live in the same situation, he won't let go of a rusted old Jeep.  It's fossilizing in their garage.

This might be why I didn't marry a car guy.  DH replaces his vehicle the second the warranty runs out, period.

I agree. DH was putting money into his 1990 jeep wrangler (similar situation to one poster, there is a hole rotted through the floor, no roof, etc) and only driving it in the summer due to the above mentioned lack of roof. About two years ago I just basically stopped talking to him about it. It was his first car he bought for himself without going into debt for it, and he loves it.So, to keep it running in a relatively safe/legal manner, he and a friend buy manuals and such and make all of the repairs on it themselves. Its still not cheap, and it is time consuming, but not as expensive as taking it somewhere to be repaired. I feel better about the cost, and he has kept the vehicle he loves. Win win.
