"Parkway" garden inpiration needed

What do you do with the space between your front sidewalk and the street? I'm considering transplanting cactus and succulants from pots to the ground in this space... also some flagstone.

Any photos or links to ideas you like?

We just have grass which is what everyone in our metro area generally does.

However, there's a blog, Greenwalks, that is all about parking strip gardens.  You may look there for inspiration.

In our area, everyone has grass too. You might see the occasional boulder or mailbox garden, but mostly our curbs are used for setting out the trash and letting dogs poop all over it.

I think most ppl have grass because technically the city owns that property. If they need to park work cars there or dig it up, they are not responsible for damages. Also, if someone using the sidewalk trips and falls onto your cacti they can sue you. I would stick to grass unless you think the space is really ugly.

You're in Austin, Texas?  I'd stick with grass, or if maintenance and keeping it green is an issue for you, I recommend a rock or dry bed garden of some sort.  Succulents would be nice too. Native Grasses.
