Neighbor dad came over to see if he could print off something on our computer

Turns out someone he does not know, from the Phillipines, has just gotten a big inheritance, but they're going to die soon and they want to transfer these assets to my neighbor! If he'll just print off this thing and sign it and take it to his bank and tell them to send it to this person's bank in the Phillipines.

He was so excited. I had to tell him it was a scam; and he really did not believe me. I said well, maybe you should go to your bank and have THEM print it off and then advise you from there.

For some reason I can just see you sitting in front of the computer eating a bowl of cereal. Neighbor runs in all excited-like, and announces his big news! Without even looking up, you very bluntly say "Its a scam". ::awkward silence:: Then he starts to yell at you, and slams the door on his way out. And through it all, you don't seemed phased.

I have no idea why, but this was the mental picture I had after reading this. Hope you like cereal :)

Wow. Somebody's still making money on that thing.

Oh, if I could ask a quick question, you mentioned in another post that you have your maiden name on your SS card and married on license. Well, me too and I thought it would bite me in the asss some day.  No problems for 20 years?  Really?  Do you have a passport? Which name?

Sorry to bogart your post but I've been wondering and meaning to ask.

Both tall and one DRIVING??? OMG!  I swear, weren't they just 11 and 13 or something? LOL! Isnt there some sort of pill we can give them to slow things down for a bit?

My mom had a different name on her ID and SS card for 25 years and it was never a problem and then all of a sudden after all that time the IRS decided to audit her because the person who filed the tax return didn't exist (though they had no problem taking taxes out of her check just giving her her refund)....

What happens?  Do they lose money?  Do they take their anger out on the bank?

Last year our local news did a cover story on a woman who fell for this scam.  I know I was supposed to feel sorry for her but I couldn't help but laugh.

Oh no, I feel badly for people that fall for this, even if it is extremely naive.

Hope is not a strategy.

He said they'd already emailed back and forth a few times, and this is why he needed to copy off what it is they were sending him.

You might not have had any problems, but if you every try to get another job it will become a PITA.  Many employers are now using e-verify.  If your SSN and married name do not match, it will mean your application is flagged and you will be taking a trip to the SSA before you can start work.  I have had to deny or postpone employment to three women in the last month because they never changed their name with the SSA after they got married.

Amazing thing about these scams is when they send you a check, they will go through (enabling you to remove the money) and then obviously bounce a few days later, leaving you with a debit account and fees.  My DH used to work at a bank and people would come in ALL THE TIME with these checks.  They wouldn't ever believe the bank that it was a scam.

He wouldn't believe me, either. I wouldn't let him use our computer to access the printer; no way are those people getting my IP address. He was completely unconvinced that it was a scam; and I told him to go to his bank and see if they'd print it off there for him.

I don't feel badly for those people at all.  If you really, honestly think you can get something for nothing... there is nothing I can do to help you.  Maybe you need to lose your money a few times over to wake up and smell the coffee.
