SMR - Are Jamba Juice and Starbucks affiliated with one another?

I did a quick Google search and couldn't find anything.

Here in SD where there is a Jamba Juice there is a Starbucks VERY close by (usually next door).  There are only a few exceptions.

On the flipside, just because there is a Starbucks doesn't mean there is a Jamba Juice.

 

Anyone else notice this?

Not true in my area.

Although there is a Starbucks literally on every block so it's not too far from the Jamba Juices.

It could just be that they both target the same demographic, so they're in the same location.  And JJ is younger than Sbx, I think, so it would make sense that they just haven't spread out as much as Sbx has.

That's what I was thinking.  I've heard that's the case with a couple fast food chains (I want to say DQ and Hardees).  I have no actual knowledge to back that up, just that someone told me that one time - Hardees puts a location wherever there's a DQ, or vice-versa.

That is an interesting observation. Every Jamba Juice I can think of is near a Starbucks.

I did find this article about the two companies in Hawaii. Here is an excerpt: 

"The brands haven't been here long. Starbucks opened in Kahala Mall in 1996 and the first Jamba Juice opened in Kailua in 1999. However, today, they're virtually everywhere, often right next to each other. That's not a surprise, as the same local holding company, Cafe Partners Hawaii, owns a 95 percent stake in each Hawaii licensee. Coffee Partners Hawaii (the Starbucks licensee) is a joint venture with Washington-based Starbucks Coffee (NASDAQ:SBUX) and JJC Hawaii LLC (the Jamba Juice licensee) is a joint venture with the privately held Jamba Juice Co."

jtx is correct. Howard Schultz - Starbucks CEO - has significant holdings in Jamba Juice. My H works for in Starbucks' corporate offices (umm, there are tons of people there, so I'm not worried about privacy issues), so I'm generally up on all the public and private Starbucks goings-on. They're not fully affiliated companies, though, so it's not as though employees of Jamba Juice get Starbucks perks or vice versa.

Interesting. Our only Jamba Juice is two doors down from a Starbucks.

This is going to be one of those things I always notice from now on, isn't it?

One rumor I heard about this was that because Jamba Juice targets similar demographics, they trust that Starbucks has doen their research and place their stores nearby.

They aren't related. Here's what Hoovers.com says about ownership:

"The Jamba Juice chain was previously operated by the Jamba Juice Company until 2006 when it was acquired by Services Acquisition Corp. A publicly traded, blank check company formed by a group of investors led by chairman Steven Berrard, Services Acquisition purchased Jamba Juice for about $265 million in cash."

Many companies do things like that.  I remember one comedian said that La Quinta was Spanish for next to Dennys....after that I saw the combination everywhere.  Next to every Target I have been to is a Jack in the Box.  I am sure there are a lot more.

We don't have Jamba Juice in my area...but there is generally a starbucks nearby the liquor stores, if not next door!  I have noticed that. :)
