Re: Working Mothers that pump?

"I just don't understand what people are upset about.  All I'm saying is to make up the time.  I don't see a big deal about that.  If you want to pump, have at it."

The point is, unless you are writing the paychecks it's not your concern.  It's between the employEE and the employER -- not the emploEE and co-worker!  If you want to start your own business and write your own rules then you can -- otherwise you have no say.

RobynK - are you a people manager, business owner, HR manager - something like that?  Yes  You're coming off like you have a good head for business.

Thank you -- that is very kind.  I actually have a degree in business and worked in HR (in a round about way) for about 5 years.
I am a people manager and I happen to work for a very supportive manager/company when it comes to these types of things.

FWIW to other posters -- I'm salaried and I work until the job is done.  Some days that's 6 hours.  Some days that means 16 hours.  So in my job there is no "making up time for breaks"....you work until the work is done Smile

I happen to work for a really good employer too.  In fact, I'm working on a yoga / lactation / prayer / meditation room proposal right now.  :)  But sometimes I get bogged down in the negative aspects of my company (like all places, there's room for improvement) ... I guess I should keep things like this in mind, and remember that we're actually doing pretty well.

Wow -- that is great that you are working on that proposal.  Many employees could benefit from that and it would be great for employee retention and moral.  Which means better workers Smile

We do have a "mother's room" in each building.  Right now they are a table and chair with a small fridge to keep the milk cold.  It's not relaxing, but it's also not the bathroom so I have no complaints.  I think we have prayer rooms in most buildings too -- we have such a diverse work force and we're very lucky that it's supported.

And people wonder why working moms choose not to re-join the workforce! Its got to be hard when your coworkers are moaning about the "break" they are "allowed" to take so that they can provide nourishment for their baby.

I mean, really, I don't even like kids, but this attitude annoys the crap out of me.  Its just a symptom of the stigma against working moms, and one more obstacle between trying to balance having a family and maintaining a career.  Employers (and coworkers) should be accomodating.

And really, anyone who nests on work time (OP is not at work, from what I gather), or makes personal phone calls, or runs errands, or gossips around the kitchen, isn't working every second of the day.

Kore!:

It's always amazing how a single thread can make me lose respect for so many people. What the hell? If, as an employee, you have a problem with a decision your employer has made, find a new job. I don't feel strongly about breastfeeding either way, but some of the opinions in this thread are mind boggling.

Ditto

I pump at work, but I also have the luxury of having my own office. I just close my door and hook up my pumps and start pumping and continue working... it may not be the most productive work but I'm still doing work.

The real issue is why do we make it so hard for hourly employees to pump. I don't think any of them are against taking shorter lunch breaks etc so they can pump twice during an 8 hour shift and by law if you work more than 4 hours in a day you are supposed to have a 15 minute paid break

I wondered about the 15 min breaks too. When I worked at Borders they told us over and over if we needed a 15 in addition to the longer break, take it. I rarely did, but the option was there. Didn't somebody say it was legal for employees to give no breaks? I think that was very, very illegal...
