WBC-book about a medical mystery

HELP!  I need suggestions.  And hopefully nothing too gruesome, because I'm a terrible hypochondriac.

The only thing I could find so far at my library was The Ice Queen by Alice Hoffman.  She gets stuck by lightning and lives.

I think you could read Handle with Care by Jodi Picoult too.  The little girl has brittle bone disease.  I tried it and could not make it through.

I would think that Middlesex would count for this category, wouldn't it? It's definitely not gruesome ...once you get past the early scenes during the war for Turkish independence.

Oooh, good idea!  I've been wanting to read that one anyway.

Middlesex is one of the BEST books I've read.  I know a lot of people aren't crazy about it but just seeing this makes me want to re-read it!  I hope you enjoy it!

I'm really confused by this one - I know the genre of medical mysteries, but I'm wondering what else would be included?  Like is The Hot Zone a medical mystery?  Or are we just talking anything medical-related?  I need more info!

I could use some clarification on this as well. I was wondering if fiction from the "medical mystery" genre would count or not.

Sorry the original wording was confusing. I tried to make is as open ended as possible, but apparently just ended up making it confusing...What I had in mind was a book (fiction or non-fiction) about a disease without treatment/cure and/or one that the medical world has little/minimal understanding of.

Robin Cook, although not a terribly great writer, always writes about super interesting medical-related phenomenon.  It's usually so interesting that I can (for the most part) ignore that he's a bad writer.

 Here's a few...

Robin Cook (which has been suggested several times)

Jodi Picoult has written a few... Handle with Care (about a brittle bone disease), Sing You Home (about infertility and IVF), House Rules (autism).

I Know This Much is True (paranoid schizophrenia)

Bed Number Ten (Guillain-Barré syndrome)

Tuesdays with Morrie (ALS)
