The other ladies provided some great advice. I've been doing taxes for the past 6 years, so no your primary residence doesn't effect your filing status. When you file your taxes, there will be a question (if you are doing yourself) if you were a resident of the specific state? The answer will be yes for your current rental address, then if will ask how long you were a resident of that state. Full year, half time, etc. It will ask for specific dates to include as well. That way it will populate for the 2nd state to be filed for the state taxes as well. If you have any other questions, irs.gov under Pub 17 has all the answers you need for taxes.
