Adopted a sheltie! (and a ? about Revolution)

Hi everyone!

As some of you may know my collie of 11 years died in August and it was just heartbreaking for our whole family. My five year old son who is on the autism spectrum took it particularly hard.

We have not been actively looking for another dog until I came across a sheltie on Petfinder on Saturday night Big Smile

So, I adopted him Sunday, took him to the veterinarian on Monday (got all his shots, micro chipped, we are treating an ear infection, and he was heartworm negative).

Anyhow, I asked my vet about the ivermectin sensitivity and she recommended Revolution. So, I am going to get that. Has anyone's animal been on that? We have three other dogs (two we have had for 11 years, one we have for 3 1/2 years) and they are all on Heartguard / Frontline. Educate me about this medication! I have heard it is strong and can cause seizures....but maybe that is just an overreaction.

 Thanks in advance!!!!

(oh and this dog reminds me of when my collie, Laddie, was a puppy...great addition to our family and my son loves him!!!)

You will forever be my best friend. I can almost feel our hugs. I will ensure everyone will know (now and in the future) what a genuine, kind, loving person you were...I already miss your laughter and our daily conversations. I love you, Samantha. May 20, 1983- February 20, 2012

Congrats on your new pup! Shelties are beautiful. And kudos for adopting - not buying. You did a great thing. What did you name him?

My girl, a six-year-old lab, uses Revolution and has had no issues. Your vet probably knows best in this situation. I completely trust my vet, and he highly recommended Revolution.

congrats in your new family member! I love shelites :) You are very correct to worry about ivermectin toxicy in collies. It's not just ivermectin but a whole host of meds. You can actually test for the gene of it would make you feel better. That being said the dose of ivermectin in heartgaurd is really low and very very safe even for ivermectin sensitive dogs.

Revolution is a good combo product but I think there are better products out there for heartworm prevention.  Advantage multi is another topical combo product, pretty similar to revolution but I trust it more for hw. Trifexis is also a combo product that does both flea and hw but its oral so there is no topical residue. If I didn't live in the heart of tick country I would have my dog on Trifexis no doubt about it.

Thanks ladies! His name is Brian (my 5 year old named him, lol) but he does respond to it already! We adopted him from a shelter about 20 minutes from here. They found him wandering : S

Good to know your dog does well on Revolution!!!!

I want pictures!

I didn't say it in my last post. I meant to but didn't.  I have known a few dogs on monthly Revolution that showed positive for HW on their annual screening for the disease.  These are pretty good owners so I imagine if any owner they would have been quite vigilant about their application

My dog has been on revolution for about two years now and we haven't had any issues, but after reading some things others have said here I'm now a little worried haha. The best thing is to talk to your vet and see what he has to say. We originally got our dog on it when she had scarcoptic mange because it helps with that, and just kept her on it as it was easier than giving her separate treatment for fleas/ticks and heartworm.
