We're moving to the Charleston area

Hello fellow Nesties! My husband & I are moving to Charleston and we are searching for good neighborhoods to look at while we are making our decision on a home purchase. We are in our early thirties, planning to have kids soon and we're looking for a neighborhood that we would fit into with others similiar. Any suggestions on places we could look into? We are also thinking of the North Charleston/Summerville area, but any and all suggestions are most definitely welcome!

Hey there! We just bought a house in West Ashley, and we love it. We're only about a 5 minute drive to downtown Charleston, and we can walk to the restaurants and shops in the Avondale Triangle. The houses are smallish and old, but have tons of character and we love the neighborhood. If that's not your thing, Mt. Pleasant and James Island are really nice for bigger, newer homes in sprawling neighborhoods. Same for Johns Island. I don't know Summerville very well, but I hear it has some really cute areas and homes too, it's just a long drive to get Downtown, if that matters to you. It's definitely less expensive though (I believe).  Good luck!

We are transplants to Charleston too and love it! Where you look depends on why are you coming to Charleston. Being close to downtown and the beaches were essential for us.

Neighborhoods in the order of initial preference:

Mt Pleasant- very nice houses, nice neighborhoods, tons of shopping/restaurants/the best schools/ etc. Too pricey for us and honestly I would be tired of the traffic and living close to shops I like would have been terrible for my wallet.

James Island- This is where we ended up.  Affordable house, big yard, close to our favorite beach, good schools (not ranked as high as Mt P). Downsides, we looked at a lot of rough houses in bad neighborhoods. It's strange, there will be dilapidated old houses just down the street from a gorgeous Charleston style homes. Definitely look in person, bc the neighborhoods are a little strange.

West Ashley- Like PP said, we found a few really cute older homes in WA but just decided it was too far from the beach for us.

Downtown charleston- If only we had a budget of >500,000 to get a place we really liked... everything in our budget was too rough for us.

Summerville- Much better prices and value, has it's own downtown area. Good schools but totally NOT Charleston. It is way too far away from downtown and the beaches for our taste (DH works downtown Charleston).

North Charleston- We compared the crime rate for North Charleston 7th in the country in 2007, somewhere from 50-75ish now, whereas Charleston was 167 in 2011 and then did not look at any homes in No Charleston.

Hey there!

I do agree with the posts above. I am a Charleston native and I own a home in West Ashley as well. My neighborhood is Ashley Hall Plantation. There are young couples with and without kids around us. Shadomoss, Hickory Hill, and Village Green also in West Ashley, are good neighborhoods. (the homes in those neighborhoods are b/w brand new and 25 yrs old).  One of the newest out here is Grand Oaks. This is a wonderful subdivision my husband and I are looking into relocating to.  They have been developing it for some time now. Another great new subdivision is Carolina Bay. Most of the homes and townhouses in this new development are in the mid $100's. Great, beautiful homes! I sound like a realtor lol. I hope you find something great! And like I started out saying, I do agree with the above posts. Mt Pleasant is pricey, but great (pretty bad traffic anywhere near hwy17 though). James Island has decently priced homes built around 1960 and up.  Summerville is so good for your money. But it's kind of far out. That's the trade off. You could get a 4bed 3bath for $100k but you are essentially 20min from Charleston(but there are also young couples out there and great shopping/dining- stay near Main St and you'll be fine!).  Good luck with your search!

Oh wow, thanks for sharing the crime rates!  We will definitely mark North Charleston off of the list completely and not even look there period.  Thank you for the breakdown of the areas!  I'll hopefully be getting a transfer soon down there within the VA, so I'll be working in town.  I'm so excited to get moved and start our life together there.  Seems like Charleston has so much to offer!
