Philadelphia

We are going to be in Philadelphia from 2/27-3/3.

Does anyone have any suggestions for hotel accommodations? How is the public transit - can we get away without renting a car?

The only activity we definitely have planned is to attend the home opener for the Philadelphia Union (soccer team) at PPL Park.

If any ladies from Philly (or anyone that has been there) have any suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated!

Philly is full of stuff to do!  Definitely depends on what you both enjoy doing.  Theres a ton of historical stuff in Philly (duh...birthplace of the country haha).  Theres independence hall, constitution center, franklin institute, by that time theres still sixers games to go to and if the hockey lockout ends, flyers games will be going on!  there is the art museum and whatever conventions are going on at the convention center!  theres plenty of shopping in the area...franklin mills is a big outlet mall and if you go over the river in NJ (which can be done on nj transit) you can get to the nice malls in cherry hill!  there are also quite a few breweries in the area..yuengling being one of them and you can tour them and get free beer tastings!

as far as public transit...it's pretty good in philly...you have septa running trains, busses and rails!  now to get to the union stadium which is actually in Chester, PA...about 20-30 minutes outside of philly you may need a car.  I don't recall any train stations near the stadium when I went 2 years ago but things have changed since so I would do a little research into that!  parking at ppl is about $20!  and union games are quite fun!  i have a friend who is a son of ben and got us into all the cool things while we were there and my husband has gone to other games without me!  just be sure to bundle up cause in the seats it gets quite cold that time of year at the games!

hotels I'm not the best on that because we're only an hour outside the city so we usually drive in and out on the same day!

The Mutter museum and the Franklin Institute are my favorites in Philly.

Definitely head over to see The Liberty Bell, Independence Hall, and visit Reading Terminal Market for delicious food. DiNic's has an amazing pork and broccoli rabe sandwich with provolone cheese - featured on Man vs Food. Several other nice stands in there to try as well!

hotels - anything in Center City will work. You could go into University City (cheaper) but not further west than 40th or so.

You do not want to rent a car unless you need to leave the city. Center City is incredibly walkable - it takes about 40 minutes to walk from one side to the other. Public transit is dicey...there are two subways (one north-south, one east-west) and a bunch of regional rails but seriously, you can walk almost everywhere in the downtown.

To get to PPL Park, you'll need a car. You can take the SEPTA to Chester, but the train station is about 2 miles from the stadium and Chester is...sketchy at best and I wouldn't walk around there at night. You could cab but it would be expensive. It wouldn't be a terrible idea to take the train to the airport, then grab a cab from there...it's only about 5 miles.

My favorite things to do:

- touristy stuff (Liberty Bell, Constitution Center, Mutter Museum, Art Museum, the Barnes is amazing)

- walk around. Philly has great places to walk. Lots of good people watching in the parks (Rittenhouse, Franklin Square, Schuykill River Park)

- eat and drink. Amazing bars and restaurants.

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

There are some casinos in the area and you are also about 60-70 mins from Atlantic City.  You can take the train from 30th street station to Atlantic City.  (NJ Transit).  There are outlets and such in AC.
