Intro and question about alarms

Hi, I'm new to the board and just started poking around. I'm trying to trim our budget to increase our savings and pay down debt. One question I have is about an alarm system. My Dh works long hours and I would really like to get an alarm system for peace of mind. I just can't get on board with paying hundreds of dollars per year just for monitoring. Does anyone know of a cheaper alternative?

TTC #1 for Dh, #2 for me. HSG clear. Low AMH and endo. Multiple Clomid w/TI cycles - all BFNs. 2 IUIs with Clomid and 1 with Femara - more BFNs. IVF#1 25R, 15M, 15F. 5DT of two perfect 4AA blasts! Positive HPT at 5dp5dt. Beta #1 6dp5dt - 72. Beta #2 8dp5dt - 285. Beta #3 10dp5dt - 793. Both babies have strong beautiful heartbeats! Baby B miscarried at 7 weeks. Baby A is holding on through miscarrying her twin, sub-chorionic hematoma, and complete placenta previa. Stick, baby, stick!

Costco.com sells lots of camera servailance kits.  They video all action and some you can even monitor online.   We also got sensor lighting around the entire house that lights up as people near.

I used to work at Home Depot during college and actually had a long conversation with a customer once about ways to make your home look less inviting to a theif. I don't quite remember the whole conversation but some of the things that stuck were to have motion detection lights on the garage as well as the front/back of the house. If you have windows that someone would be capable of climbing into from outside plant thorny bushes under the windows. If you have a key fob, sleep with it beside your bed so if you hear something in the middle of the night you can hit the alarm button to alert neighbors. You could also try just getting an alarm company sign to place in your front yard.

My favorite picture because I knew I was in love that night. photo h_zps4345372b.jpg

You can buy alarms that don't require monitoring, but you're not going to get them from the big companies like ADT, Brinks, etc because they want to sell you on the monitoring service.  I'm not sure how good these companies are anyway.  A friend of mine had one and the alarm went off.  They never did call him or the police.

The cost will also be higher because the other companies subsidise the cost of the alarm with those monthly monitoring fees.

That said, making your home look occupied is better than an alarm system.  Especially if you're in the house.  The alarm system doesn't work until the thief has already broken in.

^ This. You can build a system yourself as you can afford it. Eg., maybe just get sensors for the doors now, and add window sensors later.

You might want to check with your city as well. Our town will monitor an alarm system directly for free. (You must pay for a permit, though.)

Sorry the super late response. I think we've decided to install a couple of motion sensor lights outside the house and look at planting some thorny plants under the windows in the spring. Until then I think I just need to get used to living in an area with less crime. It's hard to let go sometimes Smile
