I typically give K a choice - she either has to hold my hand or go in the stroller. If she fights it, then she ends up in the stroller and has a fit. She gets over it rather quickly and after she has been calm for awhile, I'll give her the choice again.

She typically does okay in her stroller though unless we are stopped for a long time in one spot or has been in it for a long time. As long as we keep moving, she's pretty good.

The other option is to give him a snack in his stroller. K is much happier in her stroller if she is having a snack in it.

I need to try the holding on the the stroller thing! :)

Last time I went to the mall, the kids were pushing their toy strollers. They kinda stuck wth me, but they were also a bit crazy with them (almost running people over). LOL But, it kept them calm and not running and screaming all over the place.

DD is the same way. I tell her to push the stroller and it only goes so far. Renting one of those mall car stroller works and gives me about an hour and then she wants to get out. I was thinking of getting an attachment on the stroller that she can stand on. It is supposed to be for a second child, but maybe it would change things up and maybe it would be fun to ride in the stroller a different way.

I just strap him down and make him ride if he won't cooperate. He suddenly learned to hold my had and walk nicely about three months ago. Before that he was a holy terror if he was loose and free range. I'm not sure what the solution was. I guess I was just consistent in telling him he had to hold mommy's hand or ride. But yeah wow. I hated that phase where he just took off running full speed with no rhyme or reason. Still happens occaisionally.

Maybe give her a choice sometimes? Do you want to hold onto the stroller or ride in it? Be carried or ride? Don't make walking an option?

I must have a lazy kid. He still likes riding in the stroller :)

we had dd hold on to the stroller as well and if she didnt then she had to go back in the stroller. Eventually she got the idea.

Thanks for the replies. Holding on the stroller sounds like a great plan. It is frustrating to constantly be chasing after your kid or have her crying because she is in the stroller.

I don't have great advice either ;( Theo, at 26 months, has to ride in the stroller. I've tried to let him walk next to me but he never does and we would end up leaving places frustrated & exhausted. He's only now getting somewhat better at being reasoned with, but certainly not good enough to walk on his own in public places where he's expected to behave well.

The hands down best thing ever for my kids came from Ondrea's nanny. Almost 2 yrs ago, she taught my DD to walk holding onto the stroller. I don't know what is it about that girl, maybe it's because she's not my DD's mommy but my DD did it the first time she told her, and now that my DS ditches the stroller most of the time, he sees sissy doing it, even he insists on holding onto the stroller whenever he walks. It's freakin' awesome! I cannot thank Ondrea's nanny enough for it. Up until then, I've tried kiddie leashes to no avail, I've tried all sorts of things, but nothing worked. If I recall, all she did was show my DD where on the stroller to hold on to (the side) had Ondrea's DS demonstrate it once, and that was that. It was a bit of peer pressure, and a bit of authority from someone else.

14 mos might be a little too young to get them to fully understand they need to stay close but it never hurts to start trying and practicing. My advice would be to go to an empty mall (like Westminster Mall, that place is nearly barren) and set her loose to practice. When my DS first started walking more, I'd always hold his hand and explain to him that he has to hold on to my hand. When he tries to yank away, I just tighten my grip around his fingers and that's his signal to hold my hand again.

If you know someone with an older child who knows what to do, knows to hold hands etc, see if you can gtg with them a few times. Peer pressure works like nothing else when it comes to training. Because DS has an older sister to mirror, I've had far less trouble with him taking off on me than I did with DD.

Man, I wish I had good advice but E is still not ready to be on his own. He would be EVERYWHERE! I am thankful that he does pretty well in the stroller and likes to watch people and ask what everything is. He gets annoyed after awhile if we aren't moving around. Good luck!

My daughter is 14 months old, has been walking for about 6 weeks, and now no longer wishes to ride in the stroller. We were at the mall tonight and she is here, there and everywhere. I don't want to be total pushover and have her get her way, but I don't love having a whiny kid in the stroller.

What has been successful for you in teaching your children to stay near you in a crowded place? Is it way to early for us to be even attempting this?
