hello, just moved here 2 weeks ago and i'm looking for an ob/gyn recommendation. We live in west hollywood so somehting in the general area would be great but willing to entertain traveling to other parts of LA TIA.

My husband is interviewing for a job and one of the possible places would be the LA area. Neither of us have ever been so have no idea about the areas. My Aunt lived there for 8 years but don't really want to get family involved until he goes through the interviewing process.

The job would be close to Universal City. I have a little girl and we're wanting to start trying again soon. Where should be look to rent and check out places to help us make the decision.

I know it sounds stupid, but we moved here in February and I haven't really created a group of friends yet. How do I go about making friends? Volunteering? Pick up some women at a bar? ;)

(I run a volunteer program so the volunteering thing should be obvious to me...)

A review: AOC

DH and I went to AOC on Saturday for a belated anniversary dinner. Our thoughts:

We had terrible service. I know this is not the norm, but it soured the experience.

We ordered:

Chicken liver crostini. I didn't eat it, DH thought it was fine but pricey for what it was. I tasted the salad it came on and thought it was way oversalted (and I looove salt)
Speck, arugala, apple salad. It was fine. Not special. It seemed to be missing something. In fact, there were some bread crumbs left on my plate (because they didn't switch plates after we ate the bread!!) and the crunch helped it out, LOL
Beet salad. This was good. The beets were yummy, and it came with baby carrots, and quail egg (which was not indicated on the menu. weird)
Orata. Fine, a bit fishy.
Quail. This was the best. Served with pistacios, pomegranates, and couscous. Yummy.
Dessert: Apple crostini (I think that's what it was called) Really good, buttery crust.

Side note: given they're small plates and meant to be shared, it was really weird that the Orata and Quail both came in one entire piece with no knife provided for splitting. They're not really foods you can pick at directly from the plate it came on.

Overall, we weren't impressed, despite all of the great reviews I've read.

BUT, we are going to The Foundry on Melrose this Thursday for my B-day! Thanks for the suggestion!

flu shot advice

So I had a tough time finding the regular seasonal flu shot recently. I found a Walgreen's with it yesterday, and my advice is this--if you're calling around looking for the shot, tell them you are pregnant, first words out of your mouth. Because sitting at Walgreen's & waiting for my shot yesterday, I saw two different customers come in & ask for the flu shot only to get turned away (the workers said they didn't have any more flu shots), and I'm pretty sure they had more shots than just mine.

I'll be looking for H1N1 vaccine next, so if you find it anywhere, please put up a post here. I know the county is offering it for free, so far, but I don't know if any commercial pharmacies have it yet? Walgreens said they'd get it in the next week or two, FWIW.

I'm trying to figure out where to go for my bday. I'm more interested in amazing food than I am fanciness. We live in Hancock Park/Larchmont but are willing to drive a bit for somewhere really good. The only thing off limits are seafood only places (I'm allergic)

I'm also curious about what you would consider the best sushi restaurant?

Jury Duty (FYI)

So of course I got a jury summons for the 39th week of my pregnancy.

Here's some information I found while trying to figure out how to not be in a courtroom when there's a chance I could go into labor.

I found that if you have had a child and you are breastfeeding that they will postpone you for one year. The down side is, if you have not had the baby yet, they will not give you the postponement. You're other option is to postpone for at most 6 months, but you can only postpone once. It used to be twice, but I guess they have changed it (annoying huh?)

I figured I would share my newly found information with you.

Possibly moving to LA...need advice!

I currently live in Milwaukee, WI & work for a large bank - there's a good possibility I could transfer to LA by next year (their office is in Glendora). I've only been to LA briefly - I'm more fond of northern CA - but in general I love CA - it's where I've always wanted to live. BUT - the cost of living is a lot higher than here & we have no friends or family there. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me more about LA - how it is to live there, how the people are, culture, etc. What do you love and hate about it?

Dh & I are kind of at a turning point: either buy a house, start a family, settle down - or move! We're both pretty comfortable in our jobs so there's a lot of things to consider. The only thing is if we were to move to LA I don't think we would be able to afford a house..!

I aprpeciate any advice/tips!
