I was asking last week about matresses. Well, we found a place. It's a factory and showroom in one, they make the mattresses on site. Their prices are really good and the sales people are really nice, not pushy at all. Their prices are what they are, no haggling involved. And the mattress set we decided on is soooo comfortable and a lot cheaper than any comparable mattress we have seen in any other store. Holiday Movies

I grew up with a weird dislike for the holidays (another long story) but am attempting to start a new tradition of watching lots of cheesy holiday movies to set the tone in my household (does 620sf really count as a household?).

What are some of your favorite holiday movies to watch? I need to build my collection.

I love Polar Express and is it wrong that I get a kick out of Eight Crazy Nights?

I applied to be a Big Sister in August, and after all the background checks and reference-checking, they have finally matched me!!

She's 10 and I'm so excited to meet her today!!

Any recs on websites with fun kid-stuff to do around town? I have been searching for weeks now, and I do have a bunch of fun stuff to do, but I really want to have a big variety to let her choose from.

EDIT: Tonight I meet her at the BBBS office. We will then decide what type of "activities" to do with her parents and the BBBS counselor. So today is just a "get to know you" meeting where I get to meet her family and they meet and interview me.

But starting next week we will need fun things to do. I'm sure she'll have tons of stuff she wants to do, but I want to come prepared, too!

So...I debated about asking, because I sound ridiculous, but...I need to know..

Gas Station Etiquette

I know in OR, you don't pump your own gas. I'm getting used to that. The part I have a totally akward time with is when it comes to paying. I never bring cash, so when the person comes over to pump my gas, what do I do? Do I give them my card? Do I run the card myself while they pump? Do I go inside to pay? I'm so confuuuusssseeeddddd....

Last night, I went to Arco, and I looked at the pump. Didn't look like there was a place to slide my card key pad for my card (just for the person pumping gas I assume), so I went inside after my gas was done pumping. I sorta felt like an idiot, because the person who was pumping everyone's gas was also running the "store"...

So, what's the deal? I don't want to look like an idiot Californian, but I do.

Wake up, it's sprinkling.

Driving to work, it's POURING. Get to I-5 and all of a sudden, blue sky and puffy white clouds!

From about 10am-1pm it was GORGEOUS outside my window...sunny, not too cold, no wind...

1:15 started getting dark and raining

1:30 it's POURING and our trees are flip flopping around, about to get blown over!

I love Oregon! But hate the weather!

In my fridge right now, I have Tillamook cheese, sour cream and ice cream (Mudslide). I've always loved Tillamook, but LOVE that it is local. I didn't even know they made ice cream. Yum! I figured because it was local, it was a good justified purchase tonight.

Hi Ladies! I missed you guys on Saturday :(. Hope you all had a fantastic time!

All I can say is, I love our new place! Its so fabulous compared to the apartment we were living in-I dont think I will ever go back to apartment living.

Anyway, I cant wait to have you guys over. How does a potluck GTG sound in the near future? This month is out, maybe January? I will provide wine and cocktails and kick the DH out with the boys for the night. It could be fun! Plus, save us all some $$, which we can all appreciate after the Holidays :)

There are a few funny things about this aw moment...

1) I did NOT run the Portland Marathon. I was there for the expo, get shoes at a discount and get taped by this guy. This was all to prepare for a race more than a month later. No worries, I have since removed the tape.

2) The photographer definitely took over 30 pictures from all sorts of angles yet only my foot made the article. Go figure.

3) Why did they really need to put my name in this article? Again, to feature my lovely unpainted (potentially stinky) toes?

4) Deep down, I think Dr. Forcum was trying to keep from breathing through his nose... poor guy.

5) Check out lovely man peering from behind Dr. Forcum. He kept asking lots of questions while Forcum was trying to focus on a) breathing through his mouth and b) telling me what he was about to do and c) to smile for the camera.

Totally rude pharmacist at Walgreens!

Hi there, I usually post on the Seattle boards but I'm actually here in Vancouver and since this area is pretty green friendly, I was wondering if maybe some of you ladies could answer my question. (I've also posted this on the cleaning board too, just waiting for feedback...)

I'm fairly new to the whole natural/green cleaning thing and had a question about using essential oils for spider repellent.

I've found a recipe that that calls for either citronella, lavender, cinnamon, peppermint, citrus or tea tree oil mixed with water and a bit of soap so I was wondering if one works any better than the others?

I haven't yet found anything through googling that says one is better than the other... any advice would be appreciated. :)

Melting Pot is on the corner of SW 6th and Main downtown. The restaurant is under ground, you will see a staircase that's on the corner, you walk down those stair (like if you were going to the subway). The easiest parking I've found is the garage right across the street, you pay upfront (they take debit cards), bring your ticket to dinner and get it validated, and you get 1/2 the money back.

Can't wait to see everybody!

Help! (Portland and OHSU)

Hi Oregon ladies! I need your advice. I'm currently a new grad RN living/working in Minnesota. Here's what I just posted to my board...

A couple days ago, I posted about my happy job news. After 5 months of hunting, I finally got hired as an RN at a home care agency in the cities. DH and I have been wanting to move to the cities since we got married, and we're so close!

Well, a month ago my uncle (who is a prestigious research doctor) came to visit. He decided to send out a few "connection" requests to the Oregon Health and Science University and the National Health Institute in Maryland. Both are extremely great systems and would basically give me an amazing kick start to my career. My resume and cover letter was forwarded to all of the nurse managers at OHSU by a doctor, and I didn't even apply to a specific position.

Today I got a call from one of them. She told me that she had been through 40+ interviews and didn't want to hire any of the applicants because even though some had medical/surgical experience, no one had the passion for oncology she was looking for. Then she remembered my resume/cover letter that was randomly forwarded to her a couple weeks ago. Well, I have a serious passion for oncology...it's my dream job. Basically she doesn't care that I don't have experience, she cares that I desperately want to work in oncology. What?!? DH doesn't want to move and neither do I really. I just think that in 5 years I might be seriously regretting not jumping on this opportunity! To say the least I'm torn. =(

The ladies on the Minnesota board say that I should look more into the Portland area to see if it's somewhere I'd truly be ok moving to. My mom was born/raised there, and I spent a few family vacations at Canon Beach and other random places in OR. That's about the extent of my knowledge of the state! Can you all please "sell" me Portland and/or OHSU? Should I take a leap of faith?
