I'm sure we'll be destroyed, but the players must be thrilled just to be there. They haven't been playing so well lately, with their cornerback being killed on campus last month. :( Hopefully this will inspire them.

Wellness Small Breed not settling well... Suggestions?

Hi all,

I have my 12-pound Italian Greyhound mix on Wellness Small Breed, and he is having a hard time with it (diarrhea, itchiness, etc.) I had him checked out by the vet and there were no other problems, so I am thinking about switching his food to see if it helps. Any suggestions? I've had him since March and he has eaten Natural Balance and Wellness (both original and small breed). Thanks in advance!

I had to take Duke to the vet yesterday as his ears have been bothering him. I decided to take Raven in too. Her nails are kind of long and she won't let me go near them. It is easier to have the vet techs be the bad guys. Well, check out her left front paw:

They cut her nail a little too short. :-( Her quicks are LOOONG so they got them as short as possible. As you can see her tail is wagging (but that could be because she is at our friend, Tracy's house).

AND this entire time I have been telling you that Duke is 100 pounds. Well, it is not true, it was all a lie. He was 100 pounds before the renal failure last year. He is now 81 pounds and the vet says he is at his absolutely PERFECT weight. I guess he was a little chunky before the renal, but in the long run it is good he was on the chunky side because after the renal he was in the 70's and had he not been a tad overweight his chances of surviving would have been less than they already were.

Also, I spoke to the vet about the behavioral problems I have been having lately, but the vet he saw last night is a young vet and not his regular one; so he wasn't too sure how to answer my questions. I will re-schedule an appointment with his regular vet at a later time once his ears are fixed. The vet did tell me he is happy I brought him in when I did because his ears weren't horrible so it won't take as long for them to feel better.

Our rescue loves to stock up on things during Black Friday sales! Just as an FYI - may help with Secret Santa shopping to help the GIHS as well:

Menards will have fleece blankets on sale for $1.87 each, pet bed loungers for $4.98, oversized pet beds for $9.93 and some FatHedz dog toys for $2.49. Walmart will have bath towels on sale for $2.00 each, while Target will have towels on sale for just $1.50! JoAnn Fabrics will have cuddle throw blankets for $2.99 each. Walgreens will have pet beds on sale for $4.99 and paper towels for 49 cents!

Also, if you make fleece rope toys for your rescue to sell to raise money, JoAnn Fabrics is having their fleece at I believe $2.99 a yard!

Ugh! The last week or so Bogart has been super gassy and he can definitely clear a room. He went to the vet Thursday and I mentioned it but she didn't seem concerned. The expressed his anal glands to help with the smell. He eats Chicken Soup now. Do you think I should switch foods?

He was NOT amused. Apparently it's Ok when he CHOOSES to rub against me when I'm soggy but it's different when someone else makes him do it.

However, he did NOT run away--that would be admitting defeat. He just gve mean looks.

She keeps saying things like "poor Winston, poor little guy. He deserves a good life" This is all because he got ADOPTED and is going to live with a new family. I keep trying to explain to her that she should be happy for him and that I never planned to keep him. She just doesnt get it though. Tonight she called and asked when I was dropping "the poor guy" off. Sheesh, its not like he's going to the pound!

Sirius and Tyke are way too much. The thing is, they only want to play in the house. As soon as I send them outside, they calm down, then want to come in where they start barking and wrestling again. Do you allow this? (especially if you have big dogs) If not, how do you teach them where rough play is accepted?

He started zooming (really slowly, as only old dogs do) in the morning, he kept following me and wagging like he used to, and tonight he's been almost playful!

The only problem is that he sometimes bonks into stuff when he gets a little crazy. But he seems to take it in stride.

We've been so lucky this week.

Great Adoption

A dog who had been at HUA for over 3 years - almost 4 - was adopted today! A fun-loving rat terrier who was often overlooked. Turns out he was just waiting for the perfect family to rescue :) His new dad picked him up today and I heard it was quite the sight!

Molly didn't make it.

I just got the call.

Molly's leg repair surgery was today and everything went fine. It was a little more complicated than anticipated, so the cautious vet decided to skip spaying her. Everything was fine during the surgery, and she was in post op doing just fine when she crashed. No warning, no reason, her heart just gave out.

The vet and her staff worked on her for 30 minutes and couldn't bring her back. They are heartbroken as am I... for a dog I never had the chance to meet.

The vet has already told Jenm5's dad she has more than enough to cover her expenses. I will call tomorrow to make sure everything is settled. I know she went above and beyond and will find a way to personally thank her.

I'm still pretty numb and can't let it all out because Beckett gets upset when I cry. He knows I'm sad that someone's doggie is sick and he wants to make me happy and make the dog happy. H.e.a.r.t.b.r.e.a.k.i.n.g

D@mn weather! Screwing up my Christmas card shoot

I'm going today to get the "kids" santa hats so we can take photos for our Christmas card. I don't know if we'll have time to take the photos this afternoon before it gets dark and there is a 70% chance of rain on Sunday. I guess I can always hope for Monday (and that Tillie continues to do well for the shoot).

In my Food Inc post yesterday you said you do volunteer work in the sustainable food area?

I am feeling kind of overwhelmed since watching that documentary and I'm not really sure where to start when it comes to overhauling what we eat.

I am a vegetarian. DH eat vegetarian at home since that is just what we cook. We are going to check out our local food co-op and some farmer's markets next weekend to see what the set up is and get ready for our next shopping trip.

And I did look at the link you had in your other post, so that helped clear things up a little as well.

What else can we do? There is just SO much information out there and I feel kind of dumb. lol

For instance, as a vegetarian, I've been using some of the soy based meat substitutes, but if (as the Food Inc documentary says) most soy comes from one company who uses GM soybeans, then that is obviously not something I want to support. Plus I get confused about what companies own other "organic" companies. I am still doing research but it's kind of confusing at times, which is why we plan to cut out as much confusion as we can and buy local. Any info you can give me would be appreciated.

The time is getting closer for DH and I to adopt a dog. Yippee! So I've been pricing out what we'll need. Since we're first time dog owners we have to buy everything. So far I have on the list:

-crate, crate mat
-dog bed
-food bowl, water bowl, mat
-leash, collar, id tags
-dog food, treats
-toys (I want to get at least a kong, DH wants to get a frisbee, maybe some other things)
-heart worm and flea preventative
-coat for winter (we're thinking of getting a greyhound so we really will need one)
-initial vet visit

Anything else I'm missing? All that, plus the adoption fee, will be over $600.

I'm asking for petco gift certificates for Christmas!

So i'm awake because I can't sleep because DH never came home. He didn't even call to say he was staying out, I'm FURIOUS! He has never done this, and he is with a guy who is finalizing a divorce. so I can't imagine what is going on. Neither are answering calls or texts. Ugh.

chiped/lost tooth--should I be worried?

Hi ladies!

So when I got home last night, my housekeeper had left me a note that she found a Hanky tooth on the couch when she was cleaning! It doesn't look like he lost an entire tooth, so I am worried he may have just chiped one.

I brushed his teeth this past week--which he hates anyway. So I am afraid I actualy may have been the one who chiped it! He does not seem to be in pain at all, and is eating, playing totally normally. He is going in for a dental cleaning in February, but do you think any other attention is needed?

I'm having a hard time coming up with ideas. I LOVE the idea mentioned in a previous post about doing a calendar with pictures of our dogs. I also have gotten Rusty a leather ipod case...and after that I'm drawing a blank.

So what are you getting your husband/boyfriend/significant other? I've never had this hard of a time, haha.
