I know when my husband is "asked" to work weekends to get stuff done, his boss just groups everyone together and lets everyone know they have to come in stay late. They provide food and PTO time at a later date. They did give gift cards, I felt they were a little tacky though. Also, this depends on what your employees are rated, salary or contract. With salary, you could be working all hours and it can be included in what you have to do to get the job done.

Because of the nature of my job, there is often a need for a skeleton crew on holidays. It's unavoidable...someone's got to do it. We get overtime on top of holiday pay for it, and what we do is this: volunteers are always asked for first...you never know, someone may want the time. If not enough people volunteer, my boss assigns someone. If you're assigned, it's mandatory. And the person she assigns is typically someone who never volunteers.

Usually people will volunteer for those holidays where they don't have plans. That way, when they do have plans they have a valid reason to not be assigned..."Oh, christmas? Well, I just worked over thanksgiving."

ETA: yes, overtime can be mandatory as long as you are actually paid overtime after 40 hrs.

I agree with the pp and would also include details such as if transportation could be provided (e.g. if it is far away or not easily accessible) or if people will get meals.

Generally if I've been asked to do this, I'm ok to do it if I'm given enough notice, can see how it will benefit the company, and can choose my comp time. Good luck!

I would present it like this. "We need to staff a booth at the expo X weekend from this time to this time. I need X people to be at the booth. Before assigning timeslots, I'd like to first ask for volunteers who are willing to accept either comp time or cash + a bonus (I would offer a cash/OT option, I can't tell if you're the owner) to fill these roles. If I can't get enough volunteers, we'll each have to do X hours and I'll assign them and then people can trade timeslots as needed."

Let people offer what they can do. You'll find that some people don't mind giving up 4 hours on a Sunday but for others Saturday is the big day that they need to be with their families.

If you can't offer cash, I would give a specific offer of comp time - 2 days/hours/whatever to be used at the employee's discretion. I would be pissed if I had to work the weekend and then didn't have some flexibility with when I took the days/hours.

We are a small company with work hours Mon-Thurs with 10 hr days. We all love having Fridays off.

We are participating in an upcoming large scale expo event that will recruit clients for our business that is being held on Sat. from 11-7 and Sun. from 12-6. What is the most fair way to ask employees to man our "booth" during these hours? Can it be mandated? Comp time will be given & I wanted to give a $ bonus like a gift card too.

Have you been asked or required to help with extra recruiting activities like this? Thanks
