My family celebrates St Nicholas Day (12/6) and I am making felt Christmas cookie magnets on a baking sheet and an apron for my two nieces and my daughter but I have no idea what to make for my 4 month old nephew. I want it to be something Christmas-y but I am not finding any ideas- everything seems so girly. I may just end up making him a Christmas bib and burp cloth but I was hoping for something he could play with. Any ideas? TIA!

Hey, peeps,

I've been around the Knot & Nest for quite a while now, since my engagement in July of '08 and subsequent marriage this past March, but I've hung around my local, club, and some other boards. Didn't really have a reason to come here, though I've lurked now & again.

Well, in addition to my day job (I'm a lawyer) and my side job (I'm a face painter/henna artist), and H's day job (IT tech), H & I have recently decided to start making soap and candles.

Actually, I found out recently that H used to make candles. I'd had no idea! He flies planes, plays ice hockey, scuba dives, surfs, brews beer... and makes candles?! LOL But he's like me - he loves to make stuff!

Then a couple weeks ago I won this kickass candle, and I looked it up on the company website, only to find that it was selling for $48!!! Granted, it's a FANCY candle. That started the wheels turning, since H had been talking about doing it for fun anyway... well, we've got one set of candles (one pillar, 6 votives, 3 tealights - not nearly so fancy yet) so far, and 3 batches of soap: Almond, Oatmeal Honey, Honey Chocolate. We're doing more candles tonight.

And we plan to start selling them at some point fairly soon, once we've found and worked out any bugs and produced enough stock.

So it occurred to me that the craft board might be a pretty good place to hang out, to commiserate, give and get ideas, and just generally see what's up.

This is the Crypton fabric from Joann, it's supposed to be virtually indestructible. I was sooo nervous to cut it!

Just out of curiosity, I'm not actually working on anything like this.

I saw a pattern for a throw that instructs to cast 100 stitches loosely. How long do the needles have to be??? Do you just use really long needles to knit things that will be big?

does anyone have a template for those damn martha stewart-style wraparound address labels in word/power point/photoshop that i can customize with a design? i've found damask prints, polka dots, etc., but i have my own pattern and clipart that i'd like to use, and the download is a PDF that i can't use.

i know, i'm being super lazy, but i figure - why reinvent the wheel if someone has it and is willing to share?

I'm asking DH for a sewing machine for christmas. I'm not an advanced sewer. I'd like a machine for basic stuff, i.e. hemming clothes, making pillow cases, slipcovers, etc.

My sister has a commercial grade machine I can use for heavy duty curtains or jeans so I wouldn't need anything powerful.

Do you have any recs? I'd like to keep it under $150 - is that possible? THANKS!

Does anyone know where I could find some kind of insulation type fabric? I'm making several reusable totebags to take with me when I go shopping and I'd like to try to make a couple that are insulated for cold/frozen items. I've looked @ JoAnn's and Hobby Lobby, but I can't find any that would insulate very well.

Anyone know what (or if it exists) I can use to make an embroidery design an iron on? Are there any iron on cut away stabilizers. The shop I go to doesn't have anything like that (iron on's are tear aways and the cut aways are just to float). TIA.

1. I have some Bernat Bamboo that says handwash only. Which I didn't notice before I started making a blanket for my girl. Anyone machine washed this without it falling apart?

2. If you were making armwarmers/fingerless gloves that were going to be used in Alaska (so lots of snow) would you make them out of wool for the water repellent yet still staying warm factor even if they might be scratchy?

I need a sewing machine rec.

Need Help with a blanket please

I want to make my 4 month old niece one of those fleece blankets that you tie together for Christmas. First off does any one think that is a bad idea?? I was at Walmart today and they have way cuter prints than JoAnn Fabrics did. Walmart fleece is $7.44 a yard. Is that a good price? I am not very good at measuring/pricing out material. My next question is how much material do I need? I would like to make it a little bit bigger so that as she gets older she could continue to use it. Thanks for any help that is offered!
