Puppy question...

Hi,
i have a question I thought some of you might be able to answer. It's sort of a good problem to have, but at the same time I don't want it to be bad in the long run.

We've had a new puppy for about a month now. He's really good and has figured out (for the most part) how to potty outside and how to tell us he needs to go! So excited! :) But the problem is we leave him in a laundry room during the day--he's got tons of room to move around, his food/water, crate etc. I had been leaving a puppy pad in there, but every day when I get home he hasn't used it, nor has he messed up in the room. He's a little over 3 months old, and he holds his bladder for sometimes 8 hours. I know this is a good thing for an adult dog, but I am worried he might hurt himself. A lady at Petsmart said to try using the puppy litter box. So far, he just wants to eat the pellets.

The only reason I'm really worried is I've heard they can experience kidney problems if they hold it too long for an extended period of time.

Any thoughts? Anyone have similar issues with a pup? Am I worrying about nothing?

How big is your pup?

My Newf was holding his bladder for that long without any issues at that age.

Oh poor thing! Did you ask your vet?? I think if he really had to go he would go. If he was an older dog I would think that he was abused when he would pee on the floor, so therefore he is scared to now, but since he is a puppy that wouldnt be the case. Maybe he isnt drinking much water. Do you notice if his water bowl is empty or not? Does he go right away when you let him outside? Does he act like he's in pain or runs to go outside really fast when you get home? Or is he not really in a hurry to go? I would try to pick up on other signs to see how is acting/feeling.

IMO  Yes, that is too long for a dog that size to "hold it." I you can go home during lunch, do that. If not, hire a dog walker.

Pee pads and litter boxes teach the dog that it's okay to go inside the house. Get rid of them ASAP or you may have issues down the road.

AGTison--I know! That's why I'm so worried. He's just so small and I fear he will develop problems down the road.

I don't really suspect prior abuse--and we love the heck out of him...and the weird thing is he still has accidents in the house from time to time--he has NO problem peeing on the carpet or rugs :)...maybe I just need to get him a "rug" to go on the tile in there. He must be picky! haha

When I do get home he kind of cries/whimpers, but then again, he does the same thing when my husband gets home later, and I know he hasn't been holding it.

I'm a traveling sales rep so most days I am anywhere from 1.5 to 3 hours away once I finish working, so there's no "lunch" break, unfortunately! But some days I'm home with him all day and can play/let him out more frequently.

I go to the vet this week so I'll ask when I'm there. Thanks for your advice--I will start paying attention to more signs and see if they help.
