Tropical vacation for September ?

I never thought deciding on a vacation spot would be this difficult!

We're planning a vacation for September, and want to go someplace tropical.  This is hurricane season so we're wary of the Caribbean, but not ruling it out completely.

We want to stay in a nice resort, something on par with a Four Seasons or Ritz. We've been to Maui, and loved Hawaii so much that we are tossing around the idea of Lanai and Kauai. Also looking into Bora Bora, but it may be more than we want to spend. Budget is roughly $7K for 2 people.

Any suggestions?  Would you be scared to book a Caribbean trip in September?

We were having a hard time deciding where to go in the fall for the exact same reason as you.

Bora Bora is extremely expensive. We went there for our honeymoon and the trip cost us $10K (while we had very nice accommodations, we didn't really do much in terms of activities/excursions).

Right now we are looking into Thailand. There are many beautiful tropical islands there. While flight isn't cheap, everything else is, so you can do this well within your budget.

Another option is to go to the islands in the Caribbean that are outside the hurricane belt. Turks and Caicos is supposed to be wonderful. I haven't been myself, but I'd love to go.

September is not a bad time for Hawaii, but Kauai is the rainest place on earth and the rainy period (over all the islands here) start in the fall and get very bad in the winter.

I live on Oahu and would recommend it, unless you don't like how poopulated it is.

Despite winter weather, I always recommend Maui for Jan - May for the whale watching.

There is NOTHING on Lanai or Molokai....TRUST ME on this one....

I would also stay away from the Caribbean unless you have travel insurance.

Ditto on the Turks and Caicos. We stayed on Provo (PIB) and it was gorgeous. You'll have no problem getting a super nice place with your budget. Def. get the trip insurance though.

I've been to FP on a budget - it can be done.

In Bora Bora we stayed at Chez Nono but another good budget bet is Pension Pemanutata. Slightly more expensive but still reasonably priced is the Maitai Polynesia.

One of the locals told us that the 4 F's are very reasonably priced in FP. fish, fruit, flowers and french bread. That was very true.

At Chez Nono they have a communal kitchen where you can self cater. We had a few take out meals from the mobile food vans over there and they were quite tasty and budget friendly.

If you want to do the motu picnic - don't do a private one with just you & DH - they have great group ones for a fraction of the cost.

HTH.

The Turks and Caicos got hit last year...

I would stay away from the Carribean.  Even if nothing actually happens while you are there, there would be so much stress when one is brewing in the Atlantic.  Just avoid that stress.

I wish I knew this when we were there. This is one of the few things I actually wanted to do, but they told us it would be $700. $700 for lunch and snorkeling?! No thank you!

The Cook Islands look amazing and that is supposedly the best time of year to go there. (We have been to Bora Bora and Moorea and HIGHLY recommend it, but it is expensive) . Since the Cook Islands are in New Zealand dollars it is really reasonable to stay there and that water looks to die for!

ditto x1,000 I was supposed to get married in T&C last Sept when the hurricanes hit a week before and we were moved fortunately to Jamaica being the only adjustment in our plans but I have never ever been more of a nervous wreck in my life checking for all the hurricanes etc... I will never go to the Caribbean again during hurricane season.(I obv have my own bitter reasons!)  I even choose it for the reasons that it was 'out' of the hurricane belt and that it hadn't seen a hurricane in 40 years... that showed me

I'd do a luxury cruise . . . remember the ship can get out of the way of the storm; you just have to be flexible about your ports but there are deals to be had.

I got quoted something oputrageous as well for a tour like that that ppl on the Tahiti forum were raving about. No matter how I looked at it, I couldn't justify it. The one we went on was called Teremoana Tours and they're run through Chez Nono. From memory it was something like $40 per person. Everything was included and the food was plentiful and really tasty as well.
