What we're doing at The Knot offices

Hi! I want to share with you a fun thing our office did last summer: The Knot’s Virtual Food Drive Challenge to benefit the Harlem Community Kitchen. It was great for us in NYC because rather than bring in cans, we simplified things by raising money to buy the food—no schlepping ten-pound bags to work on the subway!

The Food Bank for New York City helped us set up our own online donation site that tracked our progress with a thermometer-looking chart that filled up as the money rolled in. We were split up into teams for a little friendly competition, and we had four weeks to reach our collective goal of $5,000.00. Over the course of the month, we had bake sales, candy sales, raffles, auctions, and tons more. And people got seriously creative with fun things like a beer pong tournament, a Wii games center set up in the break room, and a lunchtime viewing of The Office— all with healthy admission fees, of course! In the end, we raised a grand total of $12,250.38.

Right now, we’re busy working on a new project and a new charity to take on this summer. And we’ve also signed up for a 5K run in Central Park for the JPMorgan Chase Corporate Challenge. We’re still waiting to hear which charity they’ve selected this year, but last year the race benefited the Central Park Conservancy.

But the New York office of The Knot isn’t the only one working on giving back. For the last two summers, our Omaha staffers have gotten together to build a house with Habitat for Humanity, and are looking forward to doing it again this year.  Every fall, our Redding office has a “Think Pink” day in honor of breast cancer awareness.

Last but not least, in honor of Earth Day later this month, we’re launching a companywide initiative to “green” our office routines, and our five offices will face off to see who can reduce their carbon footprint the most over the next three months.

Around the world, even in these tough economic times, more and more companies are choosing to go deeper than their “bottom line” by tuning in to the importance of helping others. For us at The Knot, these collective efforts are rewarding in so many ways—  not only are they a great way to liven up the workweek, but they’ve given us a way to give back to our communities, and maybe even make a difference…for better!
