NC to regulate beauty pageants for girls under 13?

Should Child Beauty Pageants Have More Legal Restrictions?

Finally, someone with some power has realized that tanning lotion and false eyelashes might not be the best thing for toddlers.

Representative Annie Mobley has introduced a bill that would establish a regulatory body called the North Carolina Agency to Regulate Beauty Pageants for Girls Under Thirteen. The agency, comprising 10 Congress members, would look into the effects of beauty pageants on young girls and make recommendations based on the findings, such as how involved parents should be and what minimum age is appropriate to start participating in pageants.

In principle, I am thrilled with this idea, especially after watching a few clips from Toddlers and Tiaras that actually brought tears to my eyes—those little girls were just so miserable.  (Naturally, the older kids seem to have fully embraced the pageant atmosphere, fussing over their hair and makeup with the same panicked attention as their moms once did.)

But in a country deeply committed to the individual’s right to parent as she sees fit, beauty pageants seem like a bit of an arbitrary—and difficult—place to start monitoring parents. Plus, it seems like psychiatrists or social workers, not legislators, would be best able to determine how beauty pageants affect young girls. If the bill passes, I'll be curious to see what effect, if any, the regulatory body has on child pageants.

Do you think that is an invasion of parents’ rights or a commonsense measure to protect children?

How old is the girl in the picture?  Her face looks a lot older than what I can see of her body does.

Could they not just spend that money and hire an outside firm/agency to look into this so that the Congress members can focus on, what I am sure are, more pressing issues in NC?

I am not so sure how I feel about this though.  I do not agree with the pagents, on a personal level, but do not think that the government should get involved, (esp setting guidelines on how involved parents should be).  Who is going to police it?

after watching that TLC show Toddlers and Tiaras, I'm thinking something needs to be done.  I'm not sure legislation is the way to go, but maybe pushing the governing bodies of these pageants to impose more rules/restrictions/common sense.

i don't see this bill going anywhere. any legislative effort that proposes to "study" anything is worthless. especially in a recession. and really, how exactly would this work?

but lawd, i wish these damn child pageants would go away. why why why do people do this to their children?!

as truly TERRIFYING as that little girl looks to me... assuming that these children are not truly endangered, I dont think the govt needs to be involved here.

Where do you draw the line, ya know? I mean, I was a serious conpetitve runner starting much younger than 13... and Ill bet there are people out there who thought it was unsafe, bad, etc. But... I dont believe it was and neither did my parents. I think these choices need to be left to the parents.

I do not at all in a million trillion years see how on earth the govt has any reason or right to be involved. While I find these pageants totally bad, I also do not think that these kids are truly at risk in them either. Creepy? for sure. dangerous? ehhhh...

I agree, at some point that there should be some regulations, but where will they stop. These pageant girls are being used at "RAG DOLLS", at least that is how I see it. However; some of these girls like the glamour and the lights.

I ask this question, because I attended a dance competition this weekend and some of the costumes were a little out there for some of the ages. A group of the girls from maybe the ages of 11-15 were wearing a little skirt with a veil attached and a boustierre. They girls were wearing spanx under, obviously, due to the fact that the routine involved a chair and floor routine. There was still tons of midriff and cheeks out.

Some parents see at as being fine due to it being a costume. As a dancer and instuctor for girls ages 5-17, I found it a bit much.

It is the parents choice and they have the right to pull their child out. But, when is it time to step in and say hey you have taken it too far. Is it the flashy costumes, the tanning spray, long days and the base of teaching our children looks are everything.

I think there needs to be more work on making the pageants socially unacceptable.  Or at least doing away with the "glitz" pageants and moving them towards a more natural appearance.

Good lord I thought that was a doll. that's a kid? gross.

I'll admit that baby and little kid beauty pagents scare the bejezzus out of me. But it's not dangerous at all and gov't action in response sounds totally absurd.

The problem is that even if you regulate the pageants, you can't regulate batsh!t crazy stage mothers. Those mothers are still going to be crappy mothers who think it's OK to use spray-tan on a 3 year old, pageant or no.
