Ugh, I think our waiter last night added more money into his tip.

I took DH out to dinner last night for his birthday using one of those Restaurants.com $25 gift certificates which automatically adds 18% gratuity to the check.  The waiter was good, so when he ran my debit card I added in an extra $5 to bring it up to over a 20% tip.

So I come into work and balance my ING like I do first thing every morning and the amount on my log for dinner is $85.97.  I could have sworn it was $75ish so I call DH and ask him to look in my clutch from last night for the receipt and sure enough, the total with both tips is $75.97.  I hate to automatically think the worst, but I worked in restaurants for enough time to know some servers would manipulate the tip line in their favor.  It would have been easy for our server to just put a 1 in front of the 5 and give himself an extra $10.  Now I have to go back to the restaurant and clear this up after work, which really pisses me off.

I had that happen before.  I disputed it w/my CC company and they fixed it.  They never even requested a copy of my receipt, actually.  I would call ING or dispute it online if you can.

Did it already clear from your ING account, or is it pending?  Sometimes they'll run your card for the bill plus like 20% (before you actually input the tip) and it adjusts when it clears.

are you sure it isn't a hold and not an actual charge. Often restaurants will run it like you left a 25% tip and in a couple of days it will be accurate

That's my back-up plan.  Plan A is to go raise hell at the restaurant and hopefully get something free for my troubles (in addition to my $10 back).

Has the amount cleared or is it pending? Sometimes the pending amount goes through as more and then it clears at correct amount.

Hmmm...it IS still pending, but it wouldn't make sense from a % standpoint.  It seems a lot more likely that a 1 was penned in.  But maybe I'll hold off until it clears.

Yes please hold off until it clears otherwise they will just tell you to wait until it clears.

They'll probably just tell you to wait until it clears. Also I've had random amounts show up in pending and then it is the right amount when it's cleared, so I don't think it always makes sense.

I didn't know that Restaurant.com adds in 18% for a tip. We just used one last week and tipped on what would have been the original amount w/out the $25 discount.

Yeah -- you do have to look at your receipt each time.  The restaurant.com certificate does say that they'll add 18%, and I've found that some places do add it, and others do not.

To the OP: I hope it'll all works out.  It would be annoying to deal with, so hopefully it's just a pending amount that will be corrected later.

I'm not sure if its every place, but everytime I've used one (with multiple restaurants) its been that way.

Thanks - I just went to Restaurant.com and I saw that some do have the tip added. DH handled it so ours probably didn't have that - at least I hope so.

Please wait until the charge clears into your account before taking action.  Until it clears, it is still changeable.

For example, a while ago I was on a road trip in a new area, and I had filled up my car at a gas station.  I checked my statement online a day or two later, and the charge from the gas station was over double what I had actually spent.  (this was at the height of gas prices last year, too)  I freaked, thinking someone had managed to fill their tank on my card, too.

Turns out that that particular gas station just puts a hold on a very large amount until the actual amount clears.  When it did clear, the # went back down to what I paid.

Anyways, when I freaked, I called my CC, and they told me there were unable to do anything until the charge cleared, specifically because of the fact that holds can be placed on more than the charge.

So, wait until it clears, and then go raise hell.  :)

Wait.  Call the restaurant first.  Only go in if you have to.  Actually, I'd call today, even though you have to wait. That way the manager will know to be on the look out and can pull the receipt more easily than having to go back through a few days worth of receipts.

Finally, give them the benefit of the doubt for heaven's sake.  It could have easily been someone hitting the wrong number.  Don't go assuming the waiter was up to no good.  Yes, that might be the case but why start out with a hostile attitude?

This is what I was going to say.

I was going to say the same.

I had to email Staples this morning.  I ordered something and the amount on my invoice is not what they charged me.  They charged about $5 more, but it was a random amount more.  I'm wondering where that came from.

Oh I know, I would never go in and make an accusation.  I'm just annoyed.  Hopefully once its no longer pending it will correct itself like others have suggested.

I had that happen to me once and it was the waitress skimming.  Apparently, she would add an extra dollar or two to each of her tips.  My bill went from $19 to $20 (yeah, that's TWO finger slips).  Small bill (it was a "dessert only" meal), but still.  I was on a business trip at the time and called the restaurant a week later, after my credit card was charged and I was balancing my account.  I raised holy heck and the manager kept saying it must have been my error...until I sent him a copy of my receipt.  They refunded the dollar (wow...generous) and never apologized.  I always check things like that.  You'd be surprised how often "mistakes" happen.

My guess is that it's a hold--that happened to us a couple of times.

If it's an error, they should fix it without fuss. No worries.

That is irritating. We had a sever add their own tip once- $20. We just called the restaurant and they refunded the overcharge since I had the copy of the slip I signed that showed the lower amount.

Wait until the charge clears and then give the restaurant a call.

Please don't go in and raise hell.  Be nice about it and consider that the manager you talk to likely isn't the person that made the mistake and you shouldn't take your anger out on them.
