new w&d - any advice?

I've never owned front loaders.  I've been told to leave the washer door open when not in use and to make sure I use HE detergent.

Anything other tricks of the trade I need to know?   I don't want to blow anything up.

Those are the two most important things I can think of.  The first time I saw ours, I was scared!  Those things looked a little intimidating!  You're going to love them...have fun washing!

I also leave the little door open where you put the detergent and softener.

those seem to be the main things. I know some people wipe out the inside rim, but if you leave the door open it should be fine.
