AW: Bragging on DH

So the cycling team at our Alma mater is having a race series the next few weeks and DH is participating.

Tonight was the first race and after falling on the first lap and losing the chain on his bike DH came back for the win in his class! Yay! He's always so critical of himself and doesn't realize how good he is. I think next week he's going to move up a class. I'm so proud of him!

This is him workin' hard to catch up.

So he's a mountain biker?? What cat is he? I'm a cycling widow as well and have been doing this for 7 years now haha.  DH is now a road cyclist but his heart lies in the mountains.  DH is actually in Boston this weekend for a four day long race with his team. That's wonderful that your husband did so well!! If you ever get bored during races....I used to take naps haha!

Actually this was his first mountain bike race. He used to do it more and then he took a break from cycling for a while and in the last year or so he's been getting back into it. He has a road bike, but he likes to borrow friends' mountain bikes and play around some. He'd like to have his own mountain bike, but the equipment is so expensive and it isn't in the budget right now.

Cycling widow is right. When he started cycling again I thought it would be so much better than skiing or golf where he's gone all day long. How naieve was I? At least if he's skiing or golfing I can get in touch with him. But it's something he loves to do so I have a hard time complaining too much.

Good luck to your DH. It sounds like he's got a long weekend ahead, but I'm sure he'll have a great time.

That's awesome! Good for him!

My DH is also super critical of himself. It drives me nuts.

haha you are super right about the expense.  We currently have 6 bikes in our garage and what I refer to as the bike room...spare bedroom on the first floor (one of those bikes is mine though haha).  I've never known not having the expense of cycling as he was already riding when we started dating!! The time thing I've gotten very used to.  He does take his phone out on his rides for emergencies so if I get worried I can call him.  He goes out on Saturday and Sunday's for 4 to 5 hours so I tend to get concerned if he gets closer to six haha!

Wow, that's a lot of bikes. We're in an apartment and I hope that by the time he gets to that point we have a house. I don't know where we'd put six bikes in our apartment. We already have enough trouble storing all his ski equipment.

I guess the cost of cycling just replaces the cost of skiing from the winter time. The difference is that he works in the ski industry and gets a lot of perks and discounts that he doesn't get with the cycling equipment.

What does your DH cary his phone in? I know he was looking at something that would let him have it with him just in case, but even then up here in the mountains some of the roads he rides on are in dead zones. Sometimes he has a signal and sometimes not.

DH sometimes carry it's in his jersey...they have small pockets in the back.  They also make these small bags that can attach underneath the bike seat.  It's harder to do on the mountain bike because it bounces around a lot.  DH has lost two phones in the woods before haha so don't be surprised if that happens!! Also, we've been so lucky when it comes to the bikes.  The only one we've ever paid for is mine.  DH is sponsored and on a team that his newest bike is from, previous bike was a gift from both our families.  If your Dh gets into it tell him to think about joining a local team.  They accept people of all levels and the higher he gets the more is covered through the team.  It helps relieve some of the cost but also it gives him other people with similar interests to hang with.  We've met a lot of people that way.  If you have any questions certainly ask me! If I don't know the answers I'm sure DH does haha.

Thanks. That's all really useful. I know the bike shop in town sponsors a team, but other than that I'm not sure. I'm sure DH knows. We have a lot of friends who are involved in cycling and they are all different levels. It's all new to me and it isn't something I'm interested in doing myself. I'm happy being the supportive wife.
