I have what is probably a REALLY stupid question

I apologize in advance and know I should just go read about/ google it, but I think you guys probably have some good info to share.

How do people know, down to the day, how far along they are in their pregnancy? Now this is going to turn into a few questions- is it only when you are charting and tracking your activities? Or do you even know when you have a "surprise"?

I'm sorry if I'm missing something really obvious...

I am not a pro by any means, but my understanding is that generally your doctor tells you how far along you are based on measurements they take.  And a lot of people nowadays are actively trying and tracking so they have a ballpark sense themselves.

Not a stupid question at all Smile Before I read TCOYF and started charting and everything I had no clue about this either!

Basically - you ovulate on one day, and the egg can only live for a day. So there is only one day you can actually conceive. However, sperm can live for up to 5 days, so there is a window of when you can have sex to conceive.

Therefore - people who are charting and know what day they ovulated can tell exactly what day the egg was fertilized. For people who aren't charting, most doctors just base it on the 'perfect 28 day cycle' with an ovulation date of CD 14.

Something else I never understood is how only two weeks after ovulation you are 4 weeks pregnant - that is based on that 'perfect 28 day cycle' as well. Assuming you ovulate on CD 14, the cycle started two weeks before you ovulate, so two weeks after you ovulate is 4 weeks.

Yes

The doctors will also ask you when your last period was. They then take a guesstimate as to when you got pregnant based on your usual cycle length and when you likely ovulated.

Not trying to be snarky at all, but the key word there is guesstimate. Like I said, they are basing all the guesses on the 'perfect cycle.' Yes that is how they figure it out if you aren't charting, but it is not accurate. It could be off by up to a week or two, depending on when you actually ovulated.

That's also why so many people think they have pregnancy scares - they think they are late when they actually just ovulated later than usual. Prime example - I am on cd 23 and still haven't ovulated yet this cycle. My last cycle was 43 days.

Again, not trying to be snarky, just wanting to make sure everyone is properly informed. So many people are misinformed about all of this. Take it or leave it Smile

Our BFP was a surprise and I was bad about tracking my period.  So the OB office did an ultrasound to measure growth and give an estimated due date.  It can change throughout your pregnancy, especially if you aren't sure when you conceived.

Dating is not an exact science...unless you go through IVF or IUI.  If you go in for your first visit the doctor will most likely ask when your LMP was and get out their handy dandy little chart and figure your EDD.  From my experience and from what I've heard even if you are charting most docs usually will just go by your LMP and not your chart dates.

U/S do give you a better guess of course but the baby does sometimes measure ahead or behind a little bit.  Both of my babies at some point did this.  This is why most women go past their due dates (especially with the first baby).  My doctors wouldn't even talk about an induction until I was 41w.
