Root Canal/Endodontist ?

Is it normal for dentist to perform a root canal?  Or do you usually get this done by an endodontist?  I always thought a dentist could do it, but after googling it seems that it would probably be better to be seen by an endodontist.  But do you know if they take emergency cases?

This is for my coworker again.  She had a root canal done in Guatemala before coming here but that tooth is aching really bad.  So she is thinking they are going to have to fix the root canal.  So we are trying to find the right kind of doctor for her to see hopefully soon!

Any recommendations for emergency endodontist appointment are appreciated!

I had my root canal done by my dentist (in Austin). I did end up seeing an endodontist (they are MORE expensive in my opinion) was because I thought I was still having pain on the same tooth (which would not be possible) if they did the procedure right. But it ended up being the tooth behind it.

I had my root canal done by an endodontist.  I was in severe pain too, but after calling several doctors and asking about emergency appointments, I still had to wait 5 days.  My dentist prescribed pain medication for the mean time.

Thanks for all of your responses.  It looks like we aren't going to be able to get her an appointment until Tuesday due to the holiday.

My dad had a root canal by a dentist while we were vacationing in Myrtle Beach (emergency) and another by a dentist at home in WV

I think regular dentists can perform root canals on teeth with only one root or at least not molars.  At least that's what mine did...and I know he takes emergency appts but not sure if he is around this holiday.  He is in Raleigh (email me at birdcagebride at gmail if you want his name).  He refers to another endodontist but I didn't particularly like him.  I know a good (and hot!) oral surgeon (wisdom teeth)...in case they decide it's a lost cause and suggest pulling the tooth.
