Or Maybe Not... Car Troubles

So we headed out to start our road trip to this wedding in Humboldt area and... the car died. It would start but then die before DH even put it in gear... I guess it's working okay now but it did this over an over for about 15 mins before it started to work again. Very reluctantly, rumbly, shaky ... we didn't want to risk getting stranded somewhere. So we're home for the holiday after all. And probably won't be getting the car fixed until Monday because all the shops are closed. Any ideas on what this could be?

Your starter might be going out. If that is the problem, it is a pretty easy and relatively inexpensive fix (depending on the type of car you have).

Dh (the car king) is requesting to know the type and year of car and whether it happened when it was warmed up or cold. Possible fuel filter problem, he said, but wants to know more details.

Oh, cool. It's a Honda Accord. It was cold when it started and DH tried to warm it up I guess. He would give it gas and after about 15-20 seconds revving it, the engine seemed to die. I should also mention the check engine light has been on for about a week but DH thought it was something that didn't need immediate attention (I can't remember what he thought it was). So I think he was tempting fate there... Thank MrPassanie for any ideas!

Does it run and drive all right some of the time? Or is it always doing the run for a few seconds and stop thing now? Does it get regular maintenance and filter changes? Sometimes it just needs a fuel filter. If it's a fuel injected newer Accord  it may do that if the filter is clogged. Some fuel gets pushed through by the electric pump but the motor uses it faster than the pump can push it through the filter. So when you re-start it the pump has enough time to re prime (pressurize) the system it and will work for a few seconds again.

It could also be the electric fuel pump. If the car is older it could be wearing out and not flowing enough fuel to keep up.

That's just a few ideas. Of course a wise mechanic once told me that 90% of the problems we think are fuel related end up being electrical :) That's why the year of the car is important since the electrical stuff should last a long time before it gives you trouble.  But sometimes computers go insane, 2001s HAL comes to mind :)

Thanks, Aaron! Yes, he has driven it a little around town since and it's been fine now. It is a 2002. He's had since 2002, it was new/not used. He thinks it's electrical. He is going to take it in no matter what.
