I wish I was back in Germany right now

I haven't been able to sleep at all tonight because my desire to go to Germany again is so strong. My family is from Germany, and I've wanted to go there/ live there all my life.  I finally got the chance to go a couple of years ago, and I fell in love with it.  I have a very strong need to travel, but Germany is by far more important to me than any other place. Have any of you ever felt this way?  I'm really wanting to book tickets to Munich for Oktoberfest in September right now. DH has never been and I would love for him to experience it before we move there for my doctorate. Oh, and Oktoberfest would not be the only place we went. I'm generally not into touristy stuff, but I've always wanted to go to Oktoberfest. More than likely, we would also head up to Dresden to see my friend and my family's old home. Possibly also go to Wittenberg since we are Lutheran. Just wondering if I'm crazy or it others feel the same way about certain places.

it must be something about germany! i've never felt that way, but my cousin has... since his high school german class 10 years ago, hes been obsessed!

he studied abroad there, and even married a german girl :-) a few months ago, he finally gave in and moved there permanently.. he lives in munich now. he even got to keep the job he had here, he just comes back every so many weeks for meetings and stuff. i can tell you that hes so much happier now- like hes finally where hes supposed to be!

My guess is everything is booked up solid for this coming Oktoberfest.  Just something to be aware of!

Where and when will you be moving here (Germany) for your studies?  How exciting!  Germany is a great place to live.

I agree with PP, you may have trouble finding a hotel in Munich now for this year's Oktoberfest.  Some suggestions- look outside Munich if you have problems finding a hotel- look outside of Munich and take a train in. Bad Reichenhall isn't too far from Munich to take the train in for the day, it is in a beautiful area, and they have salt mines there that are so fun to visit!  Garmisch Partenkirchen is also a lovely town in the Alps, it is so beautiful there, and again, not too far from Munich.  You are also close to Salzburg from these two towns, if you are interested in Salzburg.

If you really have problems finding a place, you could try Stuttgart's version of Oktoberfest too.  The Canstatter Volksfest is very similar to Oktoberfest with fewer tourists, but it is the second largest in the world- so its not really much different.  Hotels are not so expensive here during Volksfest time, the way they are outrageously priced in Munich. There's lots to do in Stuttgart and the area as well.

Good luck, and I hope you make it.  It is really lovely in Germany in the fall, a great time for you to introduce your DH to a great country.
