Where and when will you be moving here (Germany) for your studies? How exciting! Germany is a great place to live.
I agree with PP, you may have trouble finding a hotel in Munich now for this year's Oktoberfest. Some suggestions- look outside Munich if you have problems finding a hotel- look outside of Munich and take a train in. Bad Reichenhall isn't too far from Munich to take the train in for the day, it is in a beautiful area, and they have salt mines there that are so fun to visit! Garmisch Partenkirchen is also a lovely town in the Alps, it is so beautiful there, and again, not too far from Munich. You are also close to Salzburg from these two towns, if you are interested in Salzburg.
If you really have problems finding a place, you could try Stuttgart's version of Oktoberfest too. The Canstatter Volksfest is very similar to Oktoberfest with fewer tourists, but it is the second largest in the world- so its not really much different. Hotels are not so expensive here during Volksfest time, the way they are outrageously priced in Munich. There's lots to do in Stuttgart and the area as well.
Good luck, and I hope you make it. It is really lovely in Germany in the fall, a great time for you to introduce your DH to a great country.
