We've been to Chile and Argentina. Loved them! Both had a very European feel. The food and wine were fabulous. The scenery was amazing. Argentina was definitely cheaper than Chile. We did Santiago, Chile to Mendoza, Argentina then all the way down to Tierra del Fuego and back up to Santiago via Puerto Montt. We spent a month total and we can't wait to go back.

Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one's lifetime. ~Mark Twain

So jealous of your trip!  We only did 5 nights/6 days in Santiago last month due to time issues.  DH wants to go back and hit up P. Montt.

I would recommend Santiago, Chile as a good starting point.  Its super clean, safe, and the people are very friendly.  Santiago is also good if you have very limited Spanish skills--most places had stuff in english and spanish and most of the younger people are fluent in english.

We also did a day trip to Valparaiso, Vina del Mar, Reneca and 2 wineries.  I have got to post my trip report-- that will have more detailed information.

Also check out WeeMos blog.  Her and Mr Monkey went down to South America and she has some awesome pictures from their trip.

Just got back from a three week trip to Peru.  We spent about a week in Lima and the rest of the time in Cusco and surrounding area.

We had a great trip.  We especially enjoyed Cusco and of course, Machu Picchu was amazing.  Loved the Peruvian people, they are very welcoming and friendly.  We did a ton of hiking around Inca and Pre-Inca ruins. I definitely hope to do more traveling around South America in the future.

I've done Ecuador (quito and some smaller cities), Peru (Lima, Cusco, Macchu Picchu), Chile (Santiago, Atacama and Easter Island) and Argentina (Bariloche and Buenos Aires) - I would recommend all of them, although Ecuador was my least favorite.

I lived in Bolivia for 7 months.  I really loved La Paz.  It's right in the mountains, and you have access to Copacabana/Lake Titicaca, and Tiahuanaco.

La Paz is just a beautiful city, with nice cafes, shopping, art, history, huge markets and more.  I would live there again in an instant.  You would also have easy access to Peru.  The weather in La Paz is usually cooler because of the altitude.

I spent most of my time in Santa Cruz.  It's on the eastern side of the country, and is hot and dry.  It doesn't have as much to offer as La Paz, but it provides fairly easy access to the Amboro rainforest.

Amboro has hiking, waterfalls and nice flora, but it is not developed- there are no paved or cleared trails (no trail markers, no lights), stairs, or anything like that.  We hired a guide, who took us out for the weekend.  You need to bring EVERYTHING you will need, because there are no facilities once you start hiking.

When I lived in Bolivia, I spent a week flying around the country.  I flew from Santa Cruz to Tarija, to Cochabamba, to La Paz, to Sucre, then back to Santa Cruz.  It was VERY easy and affordable.  I got to see a ton!
