Front load or Top load washer

We have a front load washer which i never liked.  It just broke so we need a new washer.  Do you prefer a front load or a top load washer?  I am wondering if it is just the model I have and maybe other front load washers are better.

Thanks.

I like our front loader purely for the environmental & energy saving aspect.  It uses less water, less soap, less energy and I'm all for that.

What is it you dont like about your current washer?

Ditto! On top of that, my washer gets so much more water out in the spin cycle. My towels come out barely damp.

When I take the clothes out of the washer they are so twisted that they are wrinkled.  Even after being in the dryer they are wrinkled.

I really like my top load, but they are the only kind I've ever had.  I like that front loads use less water and energy, but I have heard a lot of negative things about them like leaking, mildew smells, and the detergent is pricey.  Hopefully these things will be fixed, but for now I am sticking with my top load.

I am a top load girl just for the fact that I hate bending over to get my clothes out of the washer....I don't even like the risers that alleviate that problem either.

I know front loaders are apparently more energy efficient but I still can't justify the extra costs associated with it. My top loader is the highest ranked on the energy star list...meaning it's as good as the medium front loaders.

That and energy efficiency is what you make it sometimes. I think you can save a lot by just using cold water, doing full loads, using the right amount of detergent, using only the necessary cycles etc.

After our wedding we purchased front loaders and I LOVE them! I was very stringent on purchasing a washer that had a "cleaning" mode (it cleans itself, just add bleach).  Another trick I have used it just to crack the door slightly after I am finished allowing the drum to dry.  Even though it says you can pile 20 towels in there I never do...it just seems like they wouldn't get that clean.

I would also suggest a brand that has a "steam" cycle then you could steam clothes that were to wrinkly.

Good luck!

That's funny about the clothes being all twisted together because I had that problem much more with the top loader than I ever do with the front loader.  In fact, I cant recall ever having to untwist anything from the front loader.

And having to lean down to get stuff out?  I had 20x more of an issue with the top loader than with the front loader.  We do have the pedestals on ours but I think it's much easier to get things out of the front loader than the top loader.  To each their own, that's why they make different models!!

As for the expense of the HE detergent....honestly never noticed it because 1) we were already using a detergent that could be used for both and 2) I use MUCH less now with our front loader so it negates any added cost.

We recently bought a top-loader after being told by 3 different salespeople and several people who own front-loaders that the extra money wasn't worth it unless you have a family or do a lot of laundry.  With just the two of us, we don't have enough laundry to justify the extra expense or to recoup the savings front-loaders provide.

I researched for about 6 months before we bought out front loader. It uses way less water and detergent, my clothes are so much cleaner, never twisted becasue there is no agitator.  The agitator(sp) also causes unnecessary wear and tear on clothes.  The front loaders do not have one.  We stacked our washer and dryer( both the largest tubs) and I love the extra room in the laundry room

My clothes are twisted, too.

My Mom had an old top loader that used to twist the clothes and she got me in the habit of shaking every thing out before you put it in the dryer.  I do that now and it really helps with my clothes not being wrinkled.

I can fit our king size comforter in our front loader washer and dryer.  I put it on delicate cycle.  Otherwise it'd cost $35+ at the dry cleaners.

The amount of clothes ours holds is amazing.  Even DH was amazed.

Do leave the washer door cracked open to allow it to dry.

Check out the Fischer and Paykel top loaders. They are energy efficient and get a lot of the water out of the clothes. It weighs the clothes before the cycle starts and spins them until they are close to that same weight. The dryer is awesome too. It has a lint bucket so the dryer never has to work harder to get passed the lint trap.

I am a college student and we have front loaders in our campus laundry room, but I always used a top loader at home.  The one thing I don't like about front loaders is that you can't open the door to put in more laundry after you have started the load.  I am always finding something that I forgot to put in the wash right after I start it and at home you could just throw it in but with the front loaders you have to wait until your next load, which for me could be another week.
