DOG FOOD: Organic/Natural recommendations?

After reading It's Me or the Dog Handbook, I want to start Finnegan on a more balanced and nutritious diet.

Can anyone recommend a good organic/natural dog food out there?

I feed my 175 lb Dogue de Bordeaux a raw prey animal diet but when I forget to thaw out meat, I give him Innova EVO.

Both of our dogs eat California Natural and they LOVE it, which is amazing because our lab is such a picky eater.

I just switched my dogs from Evo (Innova) which is a great food but made my girls too gassy! To Merrick. I love the Merrick. They dont have as much gas, its all natural, and you can actually see the vegetables throughout the food. They currently are in love with the flavor Turducken.

 I would feed anything 4, 5 or 6 stars.

www.dogaware.com is also good info on foods.

I currently feed Canidae and love it - easy to find, inexpensive, tasty for my picky eater, and good quality.

There are tons of great foods out there - Wellness, Merrick, Solid Gold, Pinnacle, Innova, CA Natural, Chicken Soup. If you find a pet store in your area that carries good foods, they will usually have free sample bags you can take home and try.

Once you narrow down a few that look promising, go to their websites and find the store locator.

A lot of people on the pet board swear by Pet Food Direct, it's delvered right to their door, but I have found Canidae much cheaper at a feed store up the road from me so I just go there.

You'll have a hard time finding a quallity food at a place like Petco or PetSmart.  Try a more local mom&pop, independent pet shop or feed store.  They would be more likely to have what you are looking for.

I wanted to make the switch, so I started doing research online and found dogfoodanalysis.com. I wanted something at least 4 stars and something that was easy to find and not super expensive. I also emailed companies or talked to sotres about free smaples. Chloe only liked maybe three brands, but one of them was Canidae. We get the biggest bag they carry at Complete Pet Mart when it goes on sale for $39.95 ($6 off) and do their frequent buyers program. We've defintly been able to tell the difference in how it makes her feel and she overall looks much healthier. She also doesn't have to eat as much to get full (we leave food out for her all the time), so it actually lasts about 2 months for us.

I am not sure where you live but any good pet store would have these brands. I purchase from a place called Feed Barn. Your regular PetSmart may not have some of the higher end brands, i know mine doesnt.

Also, depending on the size of your dog i would be careful with some of the higher end dog foods. Some of the 6 star foods are grain free and can be harsh on a dogs belly. Make sure to slowly introduct them to the food as well.

We feed ours Canidae.  As PP have mentioned, Petsmart and Petco usually don't carry the variety of natural/organic pet food.  I would recommend visiting the website of the dog food you want to try and do a store locator.  GL!

Yeah, PetCo carries several decent lines - including Solid Gold and Wellness now. And something else that I can't recall... but unless it's the only option in town, I find local feed stores and pet stores to be cheaper, more helpful, and it's nice to support local businesses.

Ditto!!  Dog Food Analysis is a great site and Canidae is a great food.  The difference in my dogs since switching their food is amazing - MUCH less shedding, shinier coats, more active, regular BMs, no more allergies.

I buy it at a local independently owned dog food store in our area, but if you get on Canidae's website, you can search for distributors in your area.

www.dogfoodproject.com will help you understand how to read dog food labels and make educated decisions.  I also feed Canidae and like it.  They recently switched the formula and I have not tried it yet though.
