Ours is only about 4,000 sq ft. and the electric bill last month was $240 (we keep the a/c at 67).

Propane costs us about $1500 for the winter months (October to March).

I am moving in (today!) to an apartment that is maybe 200 sq ft. And no, I'm not in NYC. I'm in grad school and didn't want roommates or more student loans. : P I actually think it is cozy, though. I see myself missing it when I move out.

This was why I was able to convince dh to let me hire housecleaners that come once a month.  Otherwise, I would be spending all of my time cleaning and not with our ds.  It was originally supposed to be an short-term investment but you see how that turned out for some of us.  Oops.

Surprise

Our relatively modest master bedroom (16x13) is bigger than that!

My H's friend lives in an "efficiency" apartment like that (in NYC) and, having visited him in it, I can definitely see how a person can enjoy having such a space. I know it would force me to rid myself of junk and clutter. Good luck in your new digs :)

My parent's home is approx 8,700 sqft. and it's costing my dad roughly $2000 per month in AC, granted they keep it around 67 degrees, even when they're not home. Yes it is outrageous.

LOL, ours is 1,034 - so I voted in the appropriate category - but man, what I wouldn't give to have the rest of the sq. ft. in that category...

Yikes.  We have to keep our house at 78-79 degrees or it would be over $1000 in the summer here in Phoenix at that range.

Our house is just under 1500 sq ft. Sometimes I wish it were bigger, because we have a lot of stuff, but I am glad it isn't bigger. I wouldn't want to deal with cleaning and maintaining a bigger home.

Ah, this makes me nostalgic for my old 300 square foot apartment.  It was a junior one-bedroom and I just loved that place to pieces.  It was so cozy and safe and warm.  Happy new-home-warming to you!  I hope you'll be very happy there.

Not that I wanted more space, but some of these heating and cooling numbers are making me happy we only have 1250sq ft.

We supposedly have 3500 sq ft, but I've been in houses that are listed at around 4000 sq ft and my house seems bigger. That said i think my house is too big even with 4 kids in it.

Ours is 2600sq ft and the perfect size.  Granted, we hardly even use half the house, and we could probably easily survive with something much smaller (say, around the 1800sq ft range)  The lower level of our home gets neglected with cleaning a LOT.

We just moved a couple of weeks ago.  The new place is around 2,400 above grade, with another 300 or so in the finished basement.  The old house was just under 3,000 sq. ft, all above grade.  I don't miss the difference, although I haven't noticed much less work for me in keeping the place clean...I've still got a full kitchen, 2.5 baths, and the same number of other rooms full of furniture.  It's just a little less floor to clean!

Ours is 4000 sq ft (5 bdrms, 3.5 bath).

DH and I merged two houses, so our house is comfortably full, we really haven't bought any new furniture except a dining set since my old one fell apart. We pay a cleaning lady $150/month to come clean twice a month. Our utilities for everything is about $250-$300/month (this includes cable, water, internet,  trash removal, A/C in the summer, heat in the winter, electricity).

Our is suposedly 2300 sq ft but I think they counted the garage and attic because I cant find that space at all... and its just the two of us and we're both pretty minimal.

Hank Moody: Just the fact that people seem to be getting dumber and dumber. You know, I mean we have all this amazing technology and yet computers have turned into basically four figure wank machines. The internet was supposed to set us free, democratize us, but all it's really given us is Howard Dean's aborted candidacy and 24 hour a day access to kiddie porn. People... they don't write anymore, they blog. Instead of talking, they text, no punctuation, no grammar: LOL this and LMFAO that. You know, it just seems to me it's just a bunch of stupid people pseudo-communicating with a bunch of other stupid people at a proto-language that resembles more what cavemen used to speak than the King's English.
Radio Show Host: Yet you're part of the problem, I mean you're out there blogging with the best of them.
Hank Moody: Hence my self-loathing.

We just moved in July 4th so i haven't seen the a/c  bill, but we have 3600 sq ft plus another 1700 sq ft of basement.  It really fits us well with two kids and a dog.  Cleaning 4 baths stinks though.  Waiting to see if the budget lets me get my cleaning girl again!

We have just over 3100 sq ft (4br/2.5ba) and I wouldn't want anything bigger (unless I could afford a maid). Cleaning it is a real chore.  We only bought a house this big because we want to have kids and wanted to buy a house we can live in forever.  Our power, gas and water bill run an average of $350/month year around.  In the summer the house is comfy most days with ceiling fans on (it is set on 80) and in the winter (it is set on 68) I'm comfy in sweats and my snugli. lol

I put a ring on it!

I just have to ask where you can live and get water, cable, internet, trash collection, etc. plus heat/ac for a 4000 sq. ft home for $250 - 300 a month?

Our house is just under 2000 sq ft and my gas bill alone (year round because they budget it for you) is $100 and that's with the thermostat set low in the winter.  Our house is pretty energy efficient, too.

There is a house up the street from me that was 3000 sq ft but the woman who lives there ALONE added on an additional 5000 sq ft!!!!!

YIKES!!!

We live in a residental zoned neighborhood and it cannot legally be more than a one family home. (just in case you thought she was going to rent out part)
