I choose 6-8, but I also considered myself average when I was a 4-6.

And when I was in college I considered myself average and was a 10-12.

I think clothing size is tough to judge.

I fit in anything from a 6 to a 12, depending on the garment. I'm also 6' tall.

When I made the post I was thinking pants.  American sizing.

I didn't choose average, but I think the female numbering system does more harm than good and I'm glad I don't have to use it.

I don't mean to call anyone out (and it is an anonymous poll), but in no universe is a 0-2 "average," except maybe among supermodels.

I would have said the same thing 3 years ago. Then I was able to wear size 2 pants... at a solidly "average" weight for my height (ETA my height is 5'8"). It is possible, esp with vanity sizing.

I am also built like a linebacker, small lower body, wide shoulders and ribcage... so that helped too.

It can be average if you're very short (like 5'0"). I don't fit into that category, but I have family members who do.

There's also the possibility that people have warped body images, but I thought I'd point out the other option.

Crazy as it sounds, I disagree.  I know a woman that is under 5 feet tall, though.

For my height (5'7") and build, for me a size 6-12 covers the medically healthy range.  Size 8 would be ideal BMI of 22.

A size 4 would be average for someone who is 5'1" and a 16 would be average for a woman who is 6'1", so it varies a lot.

I think a lot of people chose "average" because they're thin but not underweight.  I'm a good bit smaller than the supposed US average size (which I believe is 12 - 14), but I'm by no means underweight.  So there was no really accurate choice in the poll for my category.

And I don't think being a size 0 - 2 is necessarily underweight either.  It all depends on your height and build.  I'm short, and any excess weight is magnified on me.  "Just right" for me would be around a 4.  So it definitely varies.

I work in health policy, so maybe my opinion is skewed, but I consider myself overweight because I have a BMI that is in the overweight category. I am a size 6-8, but I think I am only 'average' in that it is the average size of the American female population.

Clothing size is so interesting to me...

I'm 5'6", and I wear a 6-8 (dress vs pants, manufacturer/designer, etc.).  I weigh 130lbs.  My BMI is 21, and I have a small frame.  I say that clothes "fit" if they look nice on me - not baggy around the bustline (usually a huge issue for me), no VPLs, etc.

I met a woman last weekend who recently lost a lot of weight.  She announced to everyone that she was now wearing a size 8.  I looked at her outfit - a GAP cargo skirt and t-shirt.  She was pulling at the skirt all night because it kept riding up on her.  The waist was cutting into her belly.  I could see the outline of her thong.  She determined that she was a size 8 because that was the smallest size that she could button/zip, not because it was the most flattering size for her to wear.

On the other hand, I know women who say that they're a size 8, and their clothes are hanging off - because that's what's comfortable.

It's all subjective.

End of my rant.  Smile

vanity sizing doesnt help either. banana republic thinks i'm a size 2 in pants which is ridiculous. i have a big booty and my thighs arent thin. i almost cried when they did my wedding dress measurements and said i should order a 12 becuase of my hip size.

Thats really tough because depending on your height and frame those sizes mean nothing

for a shorter small person an avg size is going to be much smaller

I think kris is on to something. I didn't answer the poll because I'm thin, but not underweight. I'm on the small end for average weight for my height and age. I'm skinny, but I don't look like I am in desperate need of a sandwich.

I completely agree with you.  I'm thin, but no one would look at me and think I'm underweight.  For my frame, my weight is just about right.

Agreeing with kris216 and apple_tini...I chose "average," am not "underweight" and wear a size 0-2 (depending on the designer). I am 5'6" and athletic. I think the poll just didn't provide a choice for people in my (or similar) categories, so people chose "average" even though it may not be a U.S. average of 10-12 or whatever.

ITA, i interpreted "average" to mean neither over- nor underweight, not average US size.

i'm so jealous of men, who just need to know their waist size and inseam length, and go in and buy pants accordingly. and women are stuck trying to figure out arbitrary numbers like 2--which are of course different in every. single. store.

I'm way late, but the fact is, the original poll did not include a "healthy weight but smaller than average" option. I am exactly on the dot for the healthy weight guidelines for my height, and I can wear a 2. In order to be officially underweight for my height I think I'd have to weigh, like, 92 pounds or something according to BMI charts (I'm nowhere near that and haven't been since elementary school!) I didn't pick underweight because underweight means that you weigh less than is healthy for your weight. Just to clarify for the person who said 0-2 is not average. It may not be average, but it's still not neccesarily underweight, especially for us shorties.
