Where in DFW metro area to raise family?

Hi ladies!  My DH and I moved to Tulsa about two years ago for grad school and now that we're nearing the end, we've begun thinking about next steps and where we'd like to live next year.  We've been to Dallas a few times and really like it there... well, I love it, but DH is ok with it.  We're from Ohio and both of our families are there, so moving to Texas is a big leap, but I told DH I would look into it more seriously before we talk about it again soon.

So, where would you say is the best place in DFW to raise a (future) family?  In terms of schools, affordability (we'll both be professional counselors, so not raking in the big bucks right away, obviously COL is a real factor) community, diversity, etc?  And what do you like best about the area?

TIA!

Keller is a great area to look into. The housing is still on the inexpensive side and the schools are ranked as some of the top in the state.

I second Keller.  My husband and I moved here because they have a great school system.

We just bought our first house in Frisco/McKinney area and we really like it out here. We felt like we got a lot for our money out here compared to some of the other areas of town. We are in the Frisco school district and they have a good school system. I also think it is a really kid/family friendly area. There are a lot of young couples with kids around here.

I second Frisco/McKinney area.  My husband and I live there too.  I'm a teacher in Frisco and I love the school system they have.  But, I know there are a lot of other school systems out there too.  I like Frisco because even though it has grown so much, it still has the small town feel to it among the people who live there.

I don't think there is a BEST place to raise a family....but definitely some areas are better over others (i.e. school districts).

We live in Plano and chose this area b/c the schools, resale value, tons of great shopping/restaurants/etc., safe, clean and we still have the convenience of being close enough to Dallas.

I'm in Keller - and there are kids EVERYWHERE... Lots of growth and great schools.  House priced vary from very inexpensive (100K) upwards of (1M) - but mostly in the 150-300 range.

I like the there are so many young families in our neighborhood.  As our kids get older there are more and more kiddos to play with!

One thing to think about is your practice - I'm an MFT and went to grad school while living in the DFW area.  Do you want to have a private practice?  How much do you want to charge?  What type of clientele do you want to specialize in?  Honestly, you'll probably make more money if your office is in North Dallas/Highland Park/Plano/Uptown areas (I know the Dallas side way better than the Ft. Worth Side) Other good areas would be Coppell/Las Colinas or Southlake.  All of these areas are higher in cost of living but could translate into making more money in a private practice.  You could, of course, commute to work as well but I just wanted to put that out there as something to think about.

However, if you want to work at a school or non-profit agency then I would have completely different recommendations.  Most of my friends from grad school are pursuing private practice and have done a lot of market research and this is where their practices are.  That said, you could have a really successful private practice in many areas of the metroplex.

BTW - we lived in the N. Dallas area when we were there and loved it.  We chose that area due to proximity to work/school.

I don't think there really is a "best" place. We live in Saginaw and absolutely LOVE it. The school district is good and we hope to raise our kids in the area, plus, housing is relatively cheap out here compared to a lot of other areas in the DFW Metromess
