Do you have an iPhone? Questions...

So I'm really wanting an iPhone now but am confused about the plans through AT&T.  Currently we're on a Family Plan w/~450min @ ~$70 a month.  We don't have any sort of internet plan.

So if I'm reading the AT&T website correctly, the family plans they offer for the iPhone include unlimited internet for 2 phones.  I can't figure out if you can just add it for one for $xx per month.  I'm starting to think they want you to just buy the phones and  hope most people will deal with the additional cost  when they get their first bill.  I just want to know the bottom line- in dollars.

Can anyone help??  THANKS!

On our way to the
Ironman World Championships 70.3 in November!

Check out the rates on this page - I think you'd want the Family talk plan.

The iPhone rates and plans are different than regular phone plans.  I don't think you can have have one non-iPhone and one iPhone on a family plan.  I also don't think you can have internet for only one phone of a two-phone family plan.  I don't know for sure though, so you should probably just call AT&T.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the family plans have to be two iPhones or more, not any combination of two or more phones.

Sorry, I missed that.

If you have one iPhone and one regular, you'd need one iPhone individual plan ($70) plus whatever regular individual plan you want.  I don't think you can  combine the two in to one plan.

I don't know about after the rate change with the iPhone 3G, but it definitely used to be possible under the old rate plans to add an iPhone line to a family plan with a non-iPhone.  Back in those days, you paid $9.99 for the additional line and then $20 for the data plan.  That same data plan is $30 now, plus $5 more for text messages, so my gut says you could add an iPhone line to a family plan for $45/month.  I don't know why AT&T would shoot themselves in the foot and make every phone on the plan be an iphone...

(of course, once one of you has an iPhone, the other will need one!)

I'm a lurker, but we just went through this so I can contribute.  You can add the iphone data plan to your existing plan for $30.  That is for unlimited data (internet, emails)  if you want text messages as well they come in $5- 200, $15 -1500, etc.

We upgraded my DH's phone to an iphone. Kept our family plan and added the data and some texts.  No need to change your original minutes plan, just add the $30 data plan to your bill now and you can use the iphone

That being said, if you both want iphones, it would be $60 more a month plus text package, if you want that.  At that point, you may re-evaluate your plans and go with something else.  Also, don't think that the prices in the brochures are the only packages, get a good rep and ask the TOTAL price, don't let them talk you into one of the plans on the brochure, just becuase you think it's the only ones available !

DH and I had a family plan with the original iPhone and a regular phone.  All they did was add a data package to the family plan.  Just ask at an AT&T store.
