local woman lost job for pumping (breast milk)

This just breaks my heart...

She worked at the Golden Pioneer Museum. Two weeks ago she was told that she was no longer allowed to pump at work.

I just received the following update from her:
"On April 8th I had a meeting with my employer and she presented me with only two options either resign or be fired. She made some threats during the meeting and presented me with lies (I researched what she said and they were untrue statements). Under duress I decided to leave the museum, since I was told I had to make an immediate decision. I do not want her to be able to do this to anyone else and would still like to proceed with the nurse in if you think it appropriate or if it might help other mothers in a similar situation. The health and wellbeing of my baby, [baby's name], is my first priority and the stress she put me under was affecting my milk supply, plus the fact I was not allowed to pump. No mother should be put in the position of deciding between breastfeeding their child or working to meet the financial needs of their family. A mother should be allowed to do both. I am so happy that the bill has been signed."

The bill she is talking about is Colorado House Bill 1276 which guarantees her right to pump at work... unfortunately it was only signed by the governor this past Monday (April 7) and it appears that it won't be actual law until August (unless the governor says that it will take effect earlier, which I haven't heard about).

Anyway this is making me furious and the Golden La Leche League is trying to organize a nurse-in at the museum in protest. If anyone is interested, let me know, and I can get you details.

I never knew this was an issue with some employers. Its sad that someone would give her an ulimatum (sp?) like that, but I am glad they are signing this bill to give mothers rights to bf.

Has anybody asked her if she supports the nurse-in idea?  When I did the one at Elitches, there was a big backlash because we were stealing her thunder or something.

I wish I were still BFing, and I'd come to the nurse-in.  Maybe we'll just hang out.

I applied for a job there.  Glad I didn't get it!

I think I'll write them a nasty note.

Before doing anything I would like some more details. Like why she was told she couldn't pump.

I don't have a child so I wouldn't be the best candidate for a nurse-in, but I would be more than happy to write a letter to the museum if you can provide some more information.  That is so outragous that someone was forced to make the decision between working or breastfeeding!

That's terrible.  Pumping doesn't take that long and if it does, you can make up the time before or after work.

EIV - I think her employers reasoning as to why she can't pump at work is moot - she should be able to pump no matter what.

So sad! The company I was at before ET was born had a really nice mothers room with chairs and a mini-fridge! I don't understand why people are like that!

I still nurse so if she wants/supports a nurse-in I could maybe go.  That is totally ridiculous to be fired/made to resign over that!

That is so strange that they would do that.  I used to work basically right across the street from there.  I can't believe they wouldn't work with her to find options.  I know plenty of people who work at city hall next door, and they seem like a very family friendly employer from my experience.  Hopefully she can find a new job quickly if she doesn't have legal recourse.

That's sad to hear.....what were the reasons for her getting fired?  Was it the time that it took to pump?  Was her performance suffering because of it?  Or other reasons?

That is ridiculous!  I guessing if she were to sue, they would make up a lie about her performance level going down since she had her baby or something like that.

My work has lactation rooms in almost all of our offices.  It's a natural part of life, people shouldn't be able to use it against her.

I wonder what teachers at my school do.  I know our counselor still nurses (he'll be 1 in June), but she has her own office.  Not like you can just do it in your classroom or our office space which is wide open.  Interesting to think about.

I, too, however, wonder what she was told as to why.

Yes, I'm making them go see lighthouses...what kind of teacher wouldn't?

If the law doesn't go into effect until August, couldn't they legally say "you're fired because of pumping" or some spin on that?

Tara, I've been trying to figure out all year how I'm going to pump at school when we have #2, and for the life of me I don't know where I'll do it.  At my old school I pumped in the back of the textbook storage room with no privacy and the textbook lady on the otherside of a bookshelf.  Fortunately she used to BF and was cool with it (and I could actually let down like that.)
