Eating Clean - anyone else?

I've been on Weight Watchers now for 3, going on 4 weeks. So far it has been pretty successful and I've picked up some great habits as well as made some significant lifestyle changes. One of those changes is eating clean. Anyone else eating clean? How long have you been eating clean? What are your thoughts about it?

For those not familiar with eating clean, it's pretty straight forward and more "common sense" eating based on the following healthy principles:

  • Eat whole foods. Stop buying and eating the stuff that is in the pretty packages on the shelf, that processed food that is filled with refined sugar, added sodium, unhealthy fats, white flour, as well as additives and preservatives.
  • Eat smaller meals throughout the day every 2-3 hours. Space out your meals and eat smaller amounts at each sitting. This will keep your blood-sugar levels even and keep your metabolism up.
  • Exercise portion control. Eating clean isn’t enough, you also need to use portion control because if you overeat on whole foods, you either won’t lose or you will maintain your weight.
  • Drink plenty of water. Drinkthe recommended 8 full glasses each day.
  • Drop the sodas. Sodas are filled with either refined sugars or artificial sweeteners. Either way they don’t help you lose weight or maintain good teeth.
  • Exercise regularly. Not only cardio, the type of exercise that keeps you in your target heart rate for at least 30 minutes but also strength building exercises.
  • Stop Dieting and Make it Your Lifestyle. This is just a reminder that short-term dieting isn’t going to help you keep that weight off. When you make clean eating your way of life and incorporate regular exercise, you won’t have to worry about the weight coming back.

Nice to see  you over here. :) I eat clean about 90% of the time. Every once in a while I will  have a processed granola bar type thing, or something like a  bottled teriyaki sauce(though I go for the ones with all natural ingredients). My thoughts are that it's the best way to eat :) Eating every few hours boosts  your metabolism but also makes sure you aren't hungry (and thus, overeat at your next meal). And clean/unprocessed foods just make you feel better and they just taste better, too.

I pretty much eat clean, minus the meat (vegetarian).

I like it because for the most part, I do not have to pay too much attention to calories. As long as I watch my portions, I still lose.

Yup! Here's my version of eating clean:

Post Workout- greek yogurt
Breakfast- Oatmeal w/ 1 tbsp natural peanut butter
Snack- almonds w/ cantaloupe
Lunch- chicken breast w/ chunky tomato sauce (sorta made like a pasta bake w/ no pasta)
Snack- apple
Dinner- fish tacos w/ tilapia, corn tortilla (not totally clean, but close), cabbage and a home-made cilantro-lime dressing

My one non-clean item today is the coffee creamer I use in the morning. It's my weakness and I love it!

Other non-clean items I sometimes eat are protein bars and granola bars.

Re: granola bars and eating clean --- have any of you tried the Simple Harvest line of granola bars from Quaker? I made the switch over to them a few weeks ago because these bars don't have any HFCS. I'm not sure if it qualifies as entirely clean, but seemed to be a better option.

I eat 75-80% clean.  I agree with everything MWC said.  Eating clean makes me feel so much better; I have more energy and just feel more focused and clear-headed.  I find myself craving more healthy choices rather than unhealthy choices.

I just started being more diligent about it approx 3 weeks ago, and I've noticed a huge difference in the way I perceive taste.  Last night I had plain low-fat yogurt with cinnamon and it tasted sweet!  I'm a recovering chocolate addict, so to be at the point where I don't add honey to even plain yogurt is a big deal for me.  About once a week I have a Lean Cuisine, and I can now taste all the pepper and it seems overseasoned.

I'm thinking I need to look more into this.  I follow a plan from Max Muscle but the focus is on calories and makeing sure you get so much carbs, protein and fat at each mel but you also eat every 2 hours.  It's similar to the eating clean but doesn't seem to have as many options.

I heard in her recipe book she has a recipe for homemade granola or protein bars-can't remember exactly.

Alton brown made some on his show the other night. They looked good but had 30+ carbs per bar and only 2 grams of protein I think.  That's a lot in my mind.
