Painting particle board furniture

Has anyone ever painted particle board furniture?  Did you sand and/or prime first?  Did the paint chip off?  Any tips?

Particle board won't really hold up to painting. It will eventually chip off b/c it doesn't have anything to adhere to. You could do it, and prime first, but it probably isn't worth the trouble. Sorry!

There have been several people on here that have successfully done it. I think with today's primers and paint, there will be a better chance of it adhering. I am currently in the middle of painting a laminate bookcase. I lightly sanded it, primed it, and painted a coats coats of black semi-gloss with a smooth sponge roller. Looks good so far but I haven't tested out the durability yet. Sorry! I'm considering doing a coat of epoxy on top of it.

Yep, I've painted laminate over partical board and has held up pretty well for over 2 years now. Lightly sand, prime, paint (I did two coats). One tip is to make sure you let it dry really well before doing anything with it - like at least 24 hours.

I painted a slick finished partical board IKEA piece a couple of years ago.  I tried to lightly sand, but it honestly didn't do much.  I didn't even prime it, instead just painted it with a couple of coats of FLAT paint and then once it was dry I waxed it with a thick coat of wax.  I really think the wax is what made it successful since I could scratch off the dried paint before I put it on.  The piece has been in a high traffic hallway for almost 2 years and has no dings or scratches on it.
