I hate squabbling over money

We are trying this new 'system' where we leave the debit cards at home.  We each get $30 a week for buying lunch, and random stuff during the workweek.  If we have $$ left over, it goes into the 'play' fund.

DH is aggravated b/c I spent almost all of my $30.  Yep.  Bought lunch 2x.  Then tonight he calls and asks me to pick up milk & bread on the way home.

It was late (~8pm), I am tired, and do not want to drive all the way to the grocery store.  I am also out of gas.

Yep, I'm a money waster.  I spent $15 on milk, bread & gas.  Now he's irritated because I need to take my debit card tomorrow and get cash to pay for parking downtown.

Grrrrrrr

Can I add my money squabble? My dad is in the hospital and we "can't afford to send me out there" right now. The 5 minutes later H asks me to get online and order a new lightbulb for his precious TV which cost 90% of what my plane ticket would cost. Can we say an explosion happened here after that one. I am going to see my dad.

That would piss me off.  I can't imagine DH ever saying I couldn't go see a sick family member.  I'm glad yours realized how important it is.

I think our main issue is because he thinks I'm too spontaneous in my spending, and there's definitely some truth in that.  I go to the grocery store for 3 things and leave with 15.

I really have been trying to work on my spending habits, so it got to me when he thought I was just not following 'the plan'.

I hate grocery stores for that very reason. I have sworn off Walmart and Super Target. I can never go into either and come out with only what I went in for. Sounds like you are trying to stick to to the plan. Some weeks it will work and sometimes, well, shiit happens :)

It sounds like your system will set you up for failure.  $30 wouldn't even fill my tank every week, let alone allow me to stop for groceries or eating lunch out.

30 bucks doesn't seem reasonable, if that includes gas and grocery stops.

Can you just continue to take your card, but reconcile all money spent once a week, and keep track of your 30 bucks that way?

Gas & groceries does not come out of the $30.  We can use our debit cards for that.

The purpose of carrying only cash is to curtail our habits of spending "just a little" on unnecessary things all month...and it adds up fast.
