How do you keep your clothes from fading?

All of my clothes fade so quickly.  I use colorsafe Tide laundry detergent, but they still fade so fast.  I live in Florida where it's hot and humid and I have to wash shirts every time I wear them, and just yesterday I was rinsing a shirt by hand, hadn't even used soap yet, and the color was running right into the water.  (from Express)  Any suggestions for making clothes last?

i think most bright/dark colors are going to fade a little the first time you wash them regardless. i have the most trouble w/ black clothes. i wash black clothes by themselves on the gentle cycle using Woolite.

ditto the vinegar!  Add it during the rinse cycle as a fabric softener (don't use dryer sheets either).  It helps to really rinse the soap residue off your clothes so they don't appear dull.

When washing darks, especially jeans, I turn them inside out and wash on cold and don't ever dry. I also just bought that Cheer Dark detergent, so I'll be trying that out soon. I just bought 2 new pairs of jeans and don't want them to fade!

Maybe it's the sun fading them?  Could it be the quality of the fabric/dye?  Does it happen to all brands or more from Express?  I wash for 3 people - DH, me and our 6 year old daughter.  Her stuff fades more.  I have to assume that it's just the fabric/dye on some items.  Most things don't fade.  I also wash with Tide - clothes always inside out and usually cold/cold.

I have also heard vinegar helps set color.  A sales lady in a swimsuit store told me to just put a little in the sink with cold water and put new swimsuits in there before ever wearing them.  Of course, nothing saves a suit from the chlorine and sun.

Have them dry cleaned to set the dyes can help.

It also helps to buy top quality as it fades less.

Ditto the inside out, cold water and air dry.

Two more things:  1.  don't pack the washer this gives the clothes more room and less friction which also contributes to a faded look.

2.   also don't use soap for every wash. Living here in FL too   ;   )

since my clothes don't get dirty dirty (except yardwork clothes)
I usually just wash them in plain water with a little oxyclean.  I know this may seem really disgusting to some!!!!

Sometimes 'fading' is actually some of the remaining soap residue which actually holds onto more dirt and dust.

I do this a lot.  I work in an office, and don't get my clothes dirty.  Every other "washing", I just run them through the rinse cycle with some vinegar.  It helps to freshen them up.  For my work clothes, I wash in either Woollite, or Woollite for Darks -- depending on the load.

I wash other clothes inside out with Tide.

I rarely use the dryer, I hang my work clothes inside to dry, and I line dry my other clothes.  I don't line dry in the middle of the day, because I don't want the sun to fade them.
